2026 Rivian R2 Revealed

2026 Rivian R2 Revealed

Today marks an exciting evolution for Rivian as they introduce the R2 to their vehicle lineup. This new model is a more compact and cost-effective option compared to the R1s, offering a fresh entry point to the brand with a starting price of $45,000, set to hit the market in 2026. The R2 will come in variations featuring one, two, or three electric motors. The base model with a single motor will drive the rear wheels, while the versions with two and three motors will offer all-wheel drive. Impressively, each configuration is designed to exceed 300 miles on a full charge, with the top-tier model capable of accelerating to 60 miles per hour in just under three seconds. Designed to comfortably accommodate five passengers, the R2 sports a wheelbase of 115.6 inches, making it significantly more compact than its R1S counterpart. Its overall dimensions include a length of 185.6 inches, a width of 84.4 inches (including mirrors), and a height of 66.9 inches, positioning it 15 inches shorter and somewhat less suited for rugged terrain than the R1S. However, the R2 doesn’t completely depart from the family lineage, boasting a ground clearance of 9.8 inches and offering a 25-degree approach angle and a 27-degree departure angle. In comparison, the R1S features a more substantial 14.9 inches of ground clearance and roughly 35-degree angles. In terms of design, the R2 remains true to Rivian’s signature aesthetic with a straightforward, rectangular shape and the iconic lighting pattern seen on the front and rear. The interior is modernized with a dual-screen display, and all seats have the capability to fold down for added versatility. The vehicle also features a rear hatch glass that can be lowered and rear quarter windows that can be opened, enhancing the overall driving experience with added ventilation. A notable feature of the R2 is its compatibility with the North American Charging Standard, allowing access to Tesla’s charging stations, alongside eligibility for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. While 2026 may seem distant, Rivian’s preparation includes constructing the manufacturing facility essential for the R2’s production. Interested buyers have the opportunity to place their reservations now, with the anticipation of deliveries starting in the first half of 2026.
