You Will Not Believe How Far the Volkswagen ID. ERA Can Go!

At the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, Volkswagen made a big statement by introducing the new ID. ERA concept SUV. This launch was part of Volkswagen’s ongoing “In China, for China” strategy, showing just how serious the brand is about building vehicles tailored to the Chinese market. The ID. ERA debuted during Volkswagen Group Night, alongside two other concept vehicles, the ID. AURA and ID. EVO, right before the show officially opened to the public.

The ID. ERA is designed to meet the needs of families and long-distance travelers. Developed in collaboration with SAIC Volkswagen, it offers a range-extender powertrain that combines a battery-electric system with a fuel-powered generator. This setup gives drivers more than 300 kilometers of pure electric driving, and when the generator kicks in, it adds another 700 kilometers. Combined, the ID. ERA can travel over 1,000 kilometers without needing to stop for a recharge or refuel, which is pretty incredible for an SUV of this size.

Technology was another major highlight of the ID. ERA. It aims to offer Level 2 plus plus autonomous driving features. This means the vehicle can handle tasks like overtaking other vehicles, turning, and merging on its own under certain conditions, although the driver still needs to stay alert. Volkswagen is putting a lot of focus on making these technologies feel natural and reliable for daily driving.

Design-wise, the ID. ERA keeps things clean and modern. It has a strong front end, split LED headlights, and a bold, boxy rear. Inside, the cabin feels futuristic but also very user-friendly. Volkswagen introduced a high-performance zonal electronic architecture, allowing the SUV to stay fresh with over-the-air updates and offering a wide range of digital services to drivers and passengers.

Volkswagen’s move with the ID. ERA is a big part of their future plans. The brand is committed to launching more than 30 new models in China by 2027, with at least 20 of them being new energy vehicles. They are clearly doubling down on innovation, electrification, and local development to better serve Chinese consumers.
