Why the GR Supra Lightweight EVO Is Toyota’s Last Performance Gift

Toyota has just raised the bar for what it means to be a driver-focused sports car with the introduction of the GR Supra Lightweight EVO. Developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, this evolution of the GR Supra is not just about raw performance, it is about stripping away everything unnecessary to deliver a purer, sharper, and more visceral driving experience.

Under the hood, the Lightweight EVO retains the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, but engineers have tuned it to squeeze out 435 horsepower. That is a noticeable bump over the standard GR Supra and enough to get this lightweight coupe from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.8 seconds. But the real story is not just in the numbers—it is how it feels on the road.

The engineers focused intensely on removing weight. The Lightweight EVO sheds approximately 38 kilograms compared to the standard version. That is achieved by removing the audio system, switching to manual seat adjustments, and fitting lighter wheels. Even the insulation has been reduced to save every last gram. The result? A car that is more agile, more communicative, and better balanced through every corner.

Handling has been dialed in even further thanks to revised suspension geometry. Toyota added stiffer dampers and recalibrated the electric power steering to give drivers more immediate feedback. The grip is enhanced by larger 19-inch matte black alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tires. Meanwhile, a carbon fiber rear spoiler and aero enhancements provide added stability at high speeds.

Braking has also been given serious attention. The Lightweight EVO comes equipped with a Brembo braking system featuring larger discs and multi-piston calipers, ensuring consistent stopping power even after repeated hard laps at the track. This Supra is not just meant to go fast—it is built to stop and corner like a proper race machine.

Inside the cabin, Toyota has kept the focus on performance. The seats are wrapped in Alcantara with red contrast stitching and GR branding, while red seatbelts and red accents on the gear lever give it a racier atmosphere. There is no touchscreen to distract you—just you, the wheel, and the road ahead.

The GR Supra Lightweight EVO is part of Toyota’s farewell to the A90-generation Supra, as production of this beloved platform comes to an end. It will be available only in limited quantities, starting in Europe from January 2025, with pricing beginning around €78,950. In United States dollars, that translates to approximately $86,100.
