Why Everyone in the UK Is Talking About the BYD Dolphin Surf
The BYD Dolphin Surf is proof that electric cars can be stylish, efficient, and packed with features without blowing your budget. Designed specifically for city life in the United Kingdom, this compact hatchback manages to combine innovation with practicality in ways that make it hard to ignore.
Three versions are available: Active, Boost, and Comfort. The entry-level Active comes with a 30 kilowatt-hour battery and a 65 kilowatt electric motor, offering 88 horsepower. It reaches zero to sixty-two miles per hour in 11.1 seconds and delivers up to 137 miles of driving range on a full charge. While it is the most affordable of the bunch, it still includes key features like a ten point one inch rotatable touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, adaptive cruise control, and six airbags.
The Boost version steps things up with a larger 43.2 kilowatt-hour battery. It maintains the same power output but extends the range to 200 miles. Interestingly, despite the bigger battery, the zero to sixty-two miles per hour time is slightly slower at 12.1 seconds, likely due to the added weight. Still, the extra range makes it a more practical option for longer commutes and occasional road trips.
For those who want the most out of their small electric car, the Comfort model brings a stronger 115 kilowatt motor producing 156 horsepower. It cuts the zero to sixty-two miles per hour time down to a zippy 9.1 seconds while still offering a respectable 193 miles of range. Comfort trim also includes premium touches like heated seats, a 360-degree camera, wireless smartphone charging, rain-sensing wipers, and a pair of smart keys.
Charging is easy across the lineup. All versions support 11 kilowatt alternating current charging and feature a combined charging system type 2 port. The Comfort and Boost trims offer faster direct current charging speeds up to 85 kilowatts, reducing charge time from thirty to eighty percent to just twenty-two minutes. The Active version tops out at 65 kilowatts, taking about twenty-five minutes for the same charge window.
Inside, the Dolphin Surf is all about intelligent space. With a flat floor and more than 20 smart storage areas, it feels bigger than you expect. Boot capacity starts at 308 liters and expands to 1037 liters when the back seats are folded flat. There are also three ISOFIX points for child seats, including one on the front passenger seat.
Every model gets a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems. This includes lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed control, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning. It is the kind of safety equipment that used to be reserved for higher-end vehicles but is now standard here.
The Blade Battery, developed in-house by BYD, is one of the safest in the industry. It uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry and is built to handle extreme conditions like high heat and physical damage without catching fire. This not only makes the Dolphin Surf more secure but also helps extend battery lifespan.
With prices starting at £18,650 for the Active, £21,950 for the Boost, and £23,950 for the Comfort, the BYD Dolphin Surf is clearly targeting value-driven buyers. And yet, it does not feel cheap. The fit and finish are impressive, the touchscreen is crisp and responsive, and the drive feels solid and confident.
If you are thinking about switching to electric but want something compact, practical, and stylish with a ton of standard equipment, the BYD Dolphin Surf is one of the most convincing options currently available in the UK market.
