This New Electric SUV Has Real Off-Road Power: Changan G318 First Look

Changan has entered the rugged electric sport utility vehicle scene with something bold. The Deepal G318 is not just another large electric vehicle—it is a vehicle built for people who want to break out of the city grid and dive into adventure without leaving behind tech or comfort.

Let us start with what makes this sport utility vehicle stand out. It is an extended-range electric vehicle, meaning it runs primarily on electricity, but a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine is there to recharge the battery when needed. In other words, you can go electric on your daily commute and still have the confidence to venture deep into remote areas. The rear-wheel-drive version offers 185 kilowatts of power with a single motor setup, while the all-wheel-drive version steps it up to 316 kilowatts thanks to dual motors—making it punchy and capable, even when the pavement ends.

For those focused on numbers, the rear-wheel-drive model accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.3 seconds. The all-wheel-drive model does the same sprint in just 6.3 seconds. The battery options offer between 100 and 190 kilometers of all-electric range under the CLTC cycle. Fuel efficiency ranges between 6.1 and 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers depending on the variant.

Where the G318 really earns its off-road credentials is in its physical design. With a ground clearance of 240 millimeters, approach and departure angles above 27 and 31 degrees respectively, and a water-wading capability of 600 millimeters, it is not just for show. It even tows up to 1,600 kilograms—perfect for pulling a trailer or a weekend toy.

Step inside and you will find a balance between comfort and practicality. The cabin features a 14.6-inch center screen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and physical knobs for when you just want that tactile control. Deepal even included six drive modes to tackle snow, mud, sand, and other tricky terrains. For camping fans, the front seats fold completely flat and line up with the rear to create a bed-like surface. Storage is everywhere—31 compartments to be exact—and with the rear seats down, cargo space jumps to 1,747 liters.

Price-wise, it starts at ¥175,900 and goes up to ¥318,000 for the top trim. That makes it highly competitive in China’s growing market for rugged electric sport utility vehicles, where it rivals names like the BYD Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 and the Tank 300.

The Changan Deepal G318 is not a concept or a prototype—it is on sale now. It is a reminder that electrification does not mean giving up your sense of exploration. Whether you are navigating your daily drive or carving a path through the mountains, the G318 is ready.
