Tesla’s New 6-Seat Model Y L Is Here: Bigger, Bolder, Better
Tesla is preparing to bring more space and comfort to its best-selling vehicle with the upcoming Model Y L. The “L” stands for “Long,” and it is exactly that—a stretched version of the familiar Model Y, tailored specifically for China’s love of roomy six-seater sport utility vehicles.
This new version grows to 4,976 millimeters in length and stands 1,668 millimeters tall, making it significantly larger than the standard model. The wheelbase has also been extended to 3,040 millimeters, helping create more legroom inside the cabin. The Model Y L retains the same 1,920 millimeters of width but now weighs 2,008 kilograms. And yes, that translates into more passenger space and improved comfort.
The six-seat layout makes it clear that Tesla is targeting families or buyers who want something more flexible than the traditional five-seater. The exterior design blends some cues from the Model X, particularly around the rear, but maintains the new facelift identity of the current Model Y.
Power is also getting a noticeable upgrade. The Model Y L comes with dual electric motors—142 kilowatts up front and 198 kilowatts in the rear—offering a combined output of 340 kilowatts or 456 horsepower. That puts it right between the Long Range All-Wheel Drive and the previous Performance trim in terms of acceleration and capability.
With Chinese buyers leaning heavily toward larger, high-tech vehicles, the Model Y L could be a strong move for Tesla to regain momentum. After a 17.5 percent sales drop in the first half of the year, this model might just be the refresh Tesla needs to stay ahead in one of its most competitive markets.
Tesla confirmed that the Model Y L will launch this autumn in China. It is not yet clear if it will come to North America, but if it does, it could definitely appeal to buyers who always want a little more space in their electric vehicle.
