Smart #6 Is Bigger Than You Think – Range, Power, And Tech Breakdown

Smart #6 Is Bigger Than You Think – Range, Power, And Tech Breakdown

The new Smart #6 shows just how far the brand has moved away from tiny city cars. Based on new images from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, this sleek sedan is a long, low four door that stretches 193.1 inches from nose to tail, with a generous 115.1 inch wheelbase. For reference, it is about as long as a classic BMW 7 Series E32 and nearly the length of two first generation ForTwo models. In its heaviest configuration, the Smart #6 weighs 4,627 pounds, which makes its efficiency figures even more interesting.

Under the skin, Smart pairs a 1.5 liter combustion engine with an electric motor in a plug in hybrid setup. The company claims a combined output of 429 horsepower and a total driving range of 1,125 miles when you start with a full tank and a fully charged battery, based on the CLTC cycle. Even running on electricity alone, the #6 can travel up to 177 miles on a single charge. Smart quotes an average consumption of 3.9 liters per 100 kilometers, or about 60 miles per gallon, which is impressive for a car this large.

The design mixes elegance with tech: a smooth body, large 20 inch wheels with intricate spokes, an active rear spoiler, and a roof mounted LiDAR unit hint at advanced driver assistance features. Smart has not shown the interior yet, but it is easy to imagine a wide dashboard filled with big touchscreens and minimal physical buttons, following current Chinese market trends.

The Smart #6 is expected to go on sale in China next year and will likely stay as a local model.
