MG IM5 and IM6 Explained: 800V Charging, 441 Miles, and Rear-Wheel Steering!
MG is stepping confidently into the future with a powerful presence at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, revealing two brand-new electric vehicles that signal the brand’s high-tech direction. The MG IM5 executive sedan and the MG IM6 sport utility vehicle are designed to blend performance, luxury, and intelligent features that speak directly to the modern driver.
The IM designation stands for “Intelligence in Motion,” and both the IM5 and IM6 show off that philosophy with advanced capabilities and standout design. David Allison, Head of Product and Planning for MG, explained that these models are about more than electric vehicle accessibility—they represent the next phase of innovation for customers who want the future today.
The MG IM5 Long Range variant can travel up to 441 miles on a single charge thanks to a 100 kilowatt-hour battery and a cutting-edge 800-volt architecture. This setup allows a 10 to 80 percent charge in only 17 minutes. Performance is equally impressive—zero to 62 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds for the IM5 and 3.5 seconds for the IM6, powered by dual Hurricane electric motors and a digital chassis for razor-sharp handling.
MG is also pushing the envelope on interior comfort and usability. Features like Rainy Night Mode and One Touch Park Assist with four modes use 360-degree cameras and semi-autonomous driving tech to handle parking effortlessly. City drivers will especially appreciate the rear-wheel steering tech that reduces the IM5’s turning circle to just 9.98 meters.
Inside, the experience is just as advanced. An ultra-high-definition 26.3-inch curved infotainment display dominates the cabin, supported by a 10.5-inch touchscreen. Every model includes a panoramic roof and a 20-speaker sound system with four ceiling-mounted Sky Speakers for a theater-like experience. The double-layer laminated glass helps keep the cabin serene and quiet.
Buyers in the United Kingdom will have six different models to choose from, with both 75 kilowatt-hour and 100 kilowatt-hour batteries, and the option of single or dual motors. Pricing starts at £39,450 for the IM5 with a 75 kilowatt-hour battery, moving up to £48,495 for the Performance version with a 100 kilowatt-hour battery. The IM6 lineup begins at £47,995 for the Long Range model and goes up to £52,995 for the Launch Edition.
MG also showcased some eye-catching design statements. The Cyberster Black edition turned heads with a premium deep black finish infused with ultra-fine glass particles. Designed by Jozef Kaban, the all-black theme inside and out gave the convertible a refined yet bold presence.
Adding even more buzz, the Cyber X concept debuted as a compact electric urban SUV with a matte grey finish, pop-up headlights, and rugged styling—positioning it as a preview of what MG’s future ‘Cyber’ sub-brand could offer.
Rounding out the festival highlights was the surprise return of the MG EX4, a reinterpretation of the iconic Metro 6R4 rally car. Updated with the electric MG4 XPower drivetrain, this tribute model shows that MG is honoring its past while embracing electrification.
MG is not just delivering electric cars—it is creating a new experience around them. Whether it is the advanced driving features, immersive interiors, or daring design, this new generation of vehicles proves the brand is serious about redefining what driving an MG means in the electric era.
