Lexus IS500 Climax Edition Revealed in Japan with Bold New Look

The Lexus IS500 has always had a bold personality, but this new limited-run version being launched in Japan takes things up a notch with a name that is impossible to ignore. Say hello to the IS500 Climax Edition. Yes, that is really what it is called. Lexus is giving the American-market IS500 Ultimate Edition a right-hand-drive makeover and a provocative new identity for its home turf.

Beyond the attention-grabbing name, the IS500 Climax Edition is a familiar formula under the skin. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 472 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. That same engine drives the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. There are no mechanical changes, and honestly, that is a good thing. In a world of turbocharged four-cylinder engines and hybrid swaps, this V8 still sings.

Lexus includes front Brembo brakes with 6-piston calipers and 380-millimeter ventilated discs, along with 19-inch forged BBS wheels finished in matte black. The Neutrino Gray exterior paint and bold red and black interior are carried over from the U.S. model. Inside, the cabin is dressed up with dimpled leather, laser-etched red accents, and special scuff plates.

Even though it is nearing the end of its life cycle, Lexus is making sure the IS500 goes out with character. Only 500 units will be sold in Japan, priced at 9,500,000 yen or roughly $65,300. Sales begin in August.

Whether you think the name is hilarious or not, there is no denying the Climax Edition adds a layer of personality to this old-school sports sedan.
