Ford Mustang GTD Just Broke Its Own Nürburgring Record—Watch Out, Ferrari
Ford is not letting up when it comes to Nürburgring dominance. After setting a blazing lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds with the Mustang GTD last year, the automaker has returned to the legendary track and gone even faster. The latest lap time? An astonishing 6 minutes and 52.072 seconds.
That extra five-second improvement did not happen by chance. Ford engineers fine-tuned several aspects of the car to squeeze out every bit of performance. Updates include a more aggressive powertrain calibration, increased torsional rigidity in the chassis, and a sharper anti-lock braking system and traction control system. The aerodynamic setup also received refinements, giving the GTD a serious edge.
And while it may wear a Mustang badge, this car is far from a standard pony car. It has a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transmission connected to the engine by a carbon fiber torque tube. The suspension is a race-grade system built by Multimatic, featuring spool-valve dampers and pushrod architecture.
Beating the Porsche 911 GT3 and Ferrari 296 GTB around the Green Hell is no easy feat. But the Mustang GTD has proven that with the right mix of power, tech, and engineering dedication, the impossible can become reality.
Ford has just released a full onboard video of the lap.
