Audi’s 2025 A5L Sportback: China’s New Favorite Sedan?

Audi just revealed the 2025 Audi A5L Sportback at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, and it looks like they really listened to what Chinese buyers want. This new long-wheelbase version stretches the traditional A5 Sportback design to offer more interior space, better technology, and that stylish liftback look people love. Built by SAIC Audi specifically for China, the A5L brings some unique touches that make it feel like its own special model.

The A5L Sportback is longer and wider than the standard A5. It measures 4,903 millimeters in length, 1,883 millimeters in width, and stands 1,427 millimeters tall, riding on a 2,922-millimeter wheelbase. Thanks to that extra space, passengers in the back seat will definitely feel the difference with more room to stretch out. Under the hood, the A5L carries Audi’s familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 four-cylinder engine, delivering 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It comes mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and the quattro all-wheel-drive system, which helps it sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 6.4 seconds.

It also features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, improving both fuel economy and stop-start smoothness. Inside the cabin, Audi brought out its latest tech. There is a sweeping panoramic MMI display combined with a separate passenger-side display for a more interactive experience. Comfort is a big focus too. Standard features include 12-way adjustable front seats with built-in massage functions, a 20-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a nine-zone smart panoramic sunroof that can change from clear to opaque almost instantly.

Practicality is still there with the Sportback’s signature hatch design, offering up to 1,361 liters of cargo space. Audi packed the A5L with driver-assist tech, too. It has 31 sensors across LiDAR, radar, cameras, and ultrasonic detectors to deliver strong safety and convenience features, like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance.

Outside, the design is bold but elegant. Matrix LED headlights with custom light signatures and second-generation digital OLED tail lights give the A5L a futuristic glow. Fun color options like Danxia Brown, Qingcheng Green, and Aurora Purple are available to help drivers stand out. For now, the Audi A5L Sportback is exclusive to the Chinese market, but it definitely shows how serious Audi is about adapting its lineup to meet local tastes.
