Alpine Hy6: V6 Hydrogen Beast With 730 HP Breaks All the Rules
Alpine is not giving up on internal combustion just yet. Instead, they are exploring an alternative path by using hydrogen to power performance cars. At the 2024 Paris Motor Show, the company unveiled the Alpenglow Hy6 concept, a futuristic supercar designed to prove that zero-emission combustion can still pack a punch.
This latest concept evolves from the earlier Hy4 prototype, but Alpine has gone bigger and bolder this time. The previous model ran with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The Hy6, however, features a brand new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that delivers an impressive 730 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, all sent to the rear wheels through a sequential transmission.
What sets this concept apart is the fact that it runs entirely on hydrogen. Alpine stores the hydrogen in three separate tanks — two in the side pods and one behind the cockpit. These tanks are kept in ventilated compartments isolated from the passenger area to ensure safety.
This V6 engine took two years to develop and was engineered from the ground up for hydrogen combustion. It revs up to 9,000 revolutions per minute and uses an aluminum block with a dry sump design. With 211 horsepower per liter, the Hy6 is built for serious speed. It sits in an LMP3 carbon-fiber chassis and is capable of reaching over 205 miles per hour. Even though it has an exhaust system, its only output is water vapor, thanks to the hydrogen fuel.
While Alpine has confirmed a production supercar is coming, they have not revealed whether it will use hydrogen or electricity. What is certain is that the brand is preparing for its debut in the United States very soon.
Alongside the Hy6, Alpine is showcasing its A290 electric hot hatch and the A390 concept SUV. The A110 R Ultime special edition is also making an appearance — the most expensive Alpine ever made.
