2026 G550 Throwback Edition Looks Like the 1980s But Drives Like the Future

2026 G550 Throwback Edition Looks Like the 1980s But Drives Like the Future

Mercedes-Benz is diving into its roots by introducing a special version of the G-Class that blends retro styling with modern performance. Named the Edition Stronger Than the 1980s, this limited-edition model taps into the iconic look of the original 1980s G-Wagen and gives it a fresh twist with today’s technology and comfort.

Only 460 units will be made for global production, making this G-Class one of the most exclusive releases from Mercedes in recent memory. It takes design cues from a retro-themed G-Class built in 2023, including Agave Green paint, headlight guards, and amber turn signals. This time around, buyers will get to choose from three nostalgic colors: Agave Green, Cream, or Colorado Beige.

All versions will come with Night Black Magno paint on the grille, brush guard, bumpers, side steps, wheel arches, and mirror caps to give the G-Class a tough, classic look. Standard 18-inch silver wheels complete the exterior package. Additional heritage touches include special badges on the hood, tailgate, and spare tire, plus off-road add-ons like a roof rack, ladder, all-terrain tires, and mud flaps.

Step inside and you are met with a cabin that balances vintage charm with modern convenience. Dove Grey plaid inserts bring the retro theme to life, while a badge reading “1 of 460” adds to the collectible vibe. The grab handle displays the phrase “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s,” and the door sills show a topography map of Schöckl mountain in Austria, the legendary testing site for the G-Class.

Under the hood, this throwback G is built on the 2026 G550 platform, which means it runs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mild-hybrid technology. It produces 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and serious off-road hardware including a two-speed transfer case and three locking differentials. Acceleration is brisk with a 0 to 60 time of 5.3 seconds, though this special edition may be slightly slower due to added gear.

Retro outside, modern inside. You still get screens for the gauge cluster and infotainment, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mercedes has not released pricing yet, but expect it to come in well above the standard G550. Deliveries are scheduled to begin later this year.
