Why Škoda’s 110 R Digital Revival Has Everyone Talking

Every now and then, Škoda sparks conversations by reimagining icons from its past, and this time it is the 110 R that gets a fresh digital life. The original coupe, launched in 1970, quickly became a symbol of affordable sportiness despite carrying a hefty price tag for its era. It sold over 57,000 units in a decade-long run, and while it was not the fastest car of its time, it had character that enthusiasts still remember fondly.

Fast forward to today, and the new interpretation of the 110 R exists only as a concept in pixels. Instead of trying to replicate retro curves, designer Richard Švec leaned into Škoda’s “Modern Solid” design philosophy. The result is a sharp, futuristic coupe featuring headlights and taillights that slide open, sleek aero wheels, and a black front panel hiding advanced sensors. Even small details, like the functional vents behind the rear windows, nod to the original car while giving it a modern twist.

Under the hood—or more accurately, beneath the surface—there is no longer a small rear-mounted four-cylinder engine. Instead, the car is imagined as fully electric, aligning with today’s industry trends. Škoda has not detailed specs, but the intention is clear: keep it lightweight, just like the original, which weighed only 880 kilograms.

The classic 110 R was modest in performance, needing 19 seconds to reach 62 miles per hour from a standstill with just 52 horsepower. But the charm was in its balance, its two cargo areas, and its everyday usability. Those traits are what made it beloved despite its limitations.

Could this digital concept become a reality? Realistically, probably not. Coupes are harder to sell in 2025, and pairing that with a purely electric setup makes the business case even tougher. Brands like Audi or Porsche are better positioned within the Volkswagen Group to carry forward affordable or premium sports cars. Still, as part of Škoda’s “Icons Get a Makeover” series, the digital 110 R reminds us why certain cars earn legendary status.
