Mercedes-Benz is stepping into a new chapter of urban mobility, and it is doing so with a bold leap forward. At Auto Shanghai 2025, the German automaker revealed its MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO system, a point-to-point driver assistance feature designed to transform daily driving in dense city environments. This system is not a self-driving gimmick. It is a sophisticated Level 2 plus solution that combines intelligent software, real-time decision-making, and what the company calls “cooperative steering,” giving drivers a new layer of support without removing their hands from the experience.

This new technology manages the complicated bits of urban driving—intersections, roundabouts, highway merges, construction detours—and does it all without the driver having to switch it off. Mercedes-Benz emphasizes that the driver is always in control, but they are not alone in the cockpit. The system makes intelligent suggestions and gently adjusts steering, braking, and acceleration while keeping the driver fully engaged. That is a key difference, especially in today’s regulatory environment.

What makes this rollout even more important is the tech underneath. The MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO system is powered by the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which also opens the door to deeper integrations in future models. It is coming first to the all-new CLA, set to enter production in April 2025, and it will be the first Mercedes to integrate software from Momenta, a Chinese tech company specializing in smart navigation without relying on high-definition maps.

Mercedes-Benz is clearly responding to Chinese regulators’ increased scrutiny around autonomous claims. By highlighting that drivers must stay alert, Mercedes reinforces that this is assistance, not automation. And the approach shows—it is smart, grounded, and realistic.
