Toyota seems ready to reveal its next big thing in the off-road world, and this time it is something smaller, more practical, and aimed at adventure seekers who do not want to compromise on capability. After nearly two years of speculation and teasers, reports suggest that Toyota is preparing to introduce the long-awaited Land Cruiser FJ very soon.

According to sources from Japan, the new Land Cruiser FJ could make its debut as early as October 21 in Japan, with a global reveal happening the day before for U.S. viewers on October 20 at 3:00 PM Eastern Time. This timing lines up perfectly with the Japan Mobility Show, where Toyota traditionally reveals some of its most anticipated models.

Under the hood, the FJ is expected to feature a naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine — the same one found in the entry-level Hilux. It produces 163 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. However, Toyota may offer different powertrain options for the U.S. market, possibly including the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers up to 326 horsepower. That would make it a much stronger fit for American buyers who expect both off-road toughness and power.

In terms of size, the new FJ is rumored to be 171.3 inches long — slightly shorter than the Toyota Corolla Cross by about 5 inches. That puts it roughly on par with the Ford Bronco Sport, making it compact yet ready for off-road action. Early images and reports suggest a boxy, retro design inspired by Toyota’s rugged heritage, paired with modern touches that appeal to today’s SUV enthusiasts.

The platform remains a mystery. Some sources claim it could ride on Toyota’s IMV-0 ladder-frame platform, shared with the Hilux Champ, while others believe it might adopt the TNGA-F architecture used in the Land Cruiser and Tacoma. Either way, it is clear Toyota is focusing on giving this model authentic off-road capability with a more approachable size and price point.

Once officially revealed, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to launch first in Japan before heading to other global markets, including North America in 2026.
