This Buick Concept Is Bigger Than a Suburban and Looks Like a Spaceship

Buick may not be making waves in the United States lately, but over in China, it still commands a lot of attention. The newest concept to emerge from General Motors’ Chinese design team proves that point clearly. Say hello to the Buick Electra Orbit, an electric concept car that combines retro design flair with futuristic innovation.

Created entirely by the General Motors China Advanced Design Center, the Electra Orbit brings the drama of 1950s space-age styling into a bold, modern era. The bodywork flows with smooth, uninterrupted curves up front and a dramatic rear overhang that screams jet-age inspiration. The metallic silver paint is aptly named “Space,” which plays perfectly with the vehicle’s celestial theme.

At nearly 19.6 feet long and 6.6 feet wide, the Electra Orbit is actually larger than a Chevrolet Suburban. Its 24-inch wheels are designed like shiny discs, and its four scissor doors open from the center, creating a grand entrance every time. Around the back, deployable aerodynamic wings pop out to help manage drag and add stability at higher speeds.

Step inside and you will find just four seats in a two-plus-two layout. Comfort is the priority, and each passenger gets a futuristic experience led by an artificial intelligence-based “wormhole” interface. For those who still enjoy some manual control, there is a unique spherical controller in the center console. This operates a massive Ring display that stretches across the dashboard from pillar to pillar.

General Motors has kept quiet about what is under the skin, only stating it uses their dedicated electric vehicle platform. It is also clear the Electra Orbit is purely a design study for now, with no plans for production. However, its influence could show up in future Buick models globally.

If you appreciate a blend of nostalgia and forward-thinking design, the Electra Orbit might just be Buick’s most exciting direction in years.
