The New Tiguan R-Line Just Outpowered the Golf GTI

The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line is finally bringing the heat. Volkswagen has given its popular compact SUV a significant power upgrade that should silence any doubts about its performance. Thanks to some serious updates under the hood, the Tiguan R-Line now puts out 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque from its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine. That is even more than the Golf GTI, which is impressive for a crossover.

This performance jump comes from a revised turbo system with higher boost pressure, reinforced pistons and rods, and an updated crankshaft. The engine also gets new oil squirters and variable valve lift on both the intake and exhaust, all working together to create a more responsive and exciting drive. It still runs on regular fuel, which is a win for your wallet.

Volkswagen ditched the third row in this third-generation Tiguan, keeping it strictly five seats across the range. That choice, along with its move to the MQB Evo platform, helped drop up to 170 pounds compared to the outgoing model. The result is better fuel efficiency and more agile handling. An eight-speed automatic transmission and the 4Motion all-wheel drive system keep all that new power grounded.

Design-wise, the SEL R-Line gets bold with 20-inch alloy wheels, standard black roof, and new paint options like Avocado Green Pearl, Sandstone Uni, and Monterey Blue Pearl. Inside, the Tiguan features a massive 15-inch infotainment display and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Volkswagen has returned to physical buttons on the steering wheel, which many drivers will appreciate. There is also a new Driving Experience Dial in the center console that adjusts drive modes, lighting, and even controls volume.

Pricing for the 2026 Tiguan SEL R-Line is still under wraps, but expect a small bump from the current model’s $36,880 base price due to all the upgrades and economic changes. More details are expected when the vehicle officially launches in Fall 2025.
