The New MG4 Is Here — Semi-Solid Battery, 530KM Range, Shocking Price
The latest chapter for the MG4 begins with the official opening of pre-sales in China, and it is making serious waves in the world of electric vehicles. SAIC Motor is stepping up in a big way, launching four initial versions of the all-new MG4 compact electric hatchback. Pricing starts at 73,800 Chinese Yuan, which is about 10,100 United States Dollars, making this a highly competitive option in the affordable electric vehicle segment.
One of the biggest highlights is the upcoming semi-solid-state battery version, which will be priced later in September. SAIC is one of the first to bring this kind of battery to mass production. Their new battery passed a three-direction needle test without any smoke emission and showed excellent performance in cold weather. They even invested around 500 million Chinese Yuan into developing a special aluminum and rare earth alloy, using elements like lanthanum and cerium, to enhance both strength and thermal resistance.
Inside the cabin, the MG4 is fully loaded. A 15.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor handles everything from navigation to media. Even more impressive is the MG and Oppo Smart Mobility System. This lets users connect their phones no matter the brand—Apple, Android, Huawei, Xiaomi—and use features like digital car keys, voice commands, app mirroring, and remote updates that unlock features like remote parking.
Performance-wise, the MG4 delivers 120 kilowatts of power and 250 Newton-meters of torque, topping out at 160 kilometers per hour. Two battery options are available: 42.8 kilowatt-hours and 53.9 kilowatt-hours, offering up to 437 kilometers and 530 kilometers of range respectively. Charging from 30 percent to 80 percent takes only about 20 minutes, and thanks to a heat pump system, drivers can retain up to 75 percent of range even in freezing conditions.
The new MG4 is also larger than its predecessor, measuring 4,395 millimeters long, 1,842 millimeters wide, and 1,551 millimeters tall with a 2,750 millimeter wheelbase. Design changes include a fresh MG logo, arrow-shaped LED tail lights, and six color options like Donglai Purple and Coral Red. Wheels range from 16 to 17 inches.
Structurally, the MG4 benefits from cell-to-body battery integration for improved interior space and stiffness. It boasts a torsional stiffness of 31,000 Newton-meters per degree, which is more than what some luxury SUVs offer. Safety is also a key point, with the battery meeting IP67 and IP69K waterproof standards. The powertrain even comes with a lifetime warranty.
The cabin combines comfort and practicality with synthetic leather upholstery, 30 storage compartments, optional vibrant interior color themes, and seats with heating and ventilation. Rear seats recline up to 27 degrees, and the panoramic sunroof comes standard. Drivers also get helpful features like blind-spot visibility assist, 360-degree cameras with transparent chassis view, automatic parking, privacy glass, and a heated steering wheel.
Storage is generous, with 471 liters in the main trunk and another 98 liters underneath. Fold the back seats down and you get a flat area large enough to sleep in. With passenger-friendly details like a 46.4-degree reclining footrest and a 503-millimeter seat base, the MG4 aims to blend compact agility with mid-size comfort.
