Limited ID.3 GTX FIRE and ICE – Volkswagen’s Boldest EV Yet
Volkswagen is stepping back into the spotlight of bold design and sporty electric driving with something special. Say hello to the production version of the ID.3 GTX FIRE and ICE, a model that merges nostalgia with next-level electric performance. Inspired by the early 1990s Golf Fire and Ice edition, this new limited-run electric hot hatch combines throwback design with modern engineering—and yes, it is going into full production.
Volkswagen will build exactly 1,990 units of the ID.3 GTX FIRE and ICE, a subtle tribute to the year 1990 when the original Golf Fire and Ice first hit the streets. This new version is not just a cosmetic revival—it is a seriously capable machine. You get to choose between two performance levels. The base variant delivers 210 kilowatts or 286 metric horsepower, while the high-output version produces 240 kilowatts or 326 metric horsepower. Both deliver a torque punch of 545 Newton meters, making city drives and backroad sprints equally thrilling.
The quicker version can launch from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 5.7 seconds, with top speed capped at 200 kilometers per hour. While those numbers are impressive, what really makes this ID.3 stand out is how it looks and feels. This is not your average electric hatchback—it is designed to turn heads and deliver thrills at the same time.
The ID.3 GTX FIRE and ICE comes dressed in a unique Ultra Violet Metallic paint job that grabs attention instantly. Contrasting against the purple are Flaming Red accents, including a bold roof frame strip and retro-style graphics along the C-pillar. The twenty inch “Locarno” wheels feature an anodized violet finish with red hubcaps, and even the puddle lamps project a “fire and ice” logo onto the pavement. It is flashy in the best possible way.
Step inside, and things get even more interesting. The cabin is a visual split between “On Fire Red” on the driver’s side and “Keep Cool Blue” on the passenger side. The seats are quilted to resemble the texture of a high-end Bogner ski jacket, with red zippers and sporty touches stitched throughout. It is playful, confident, and unmistakably unique.
Performance is more than numbers with this car—it is about the feel. Thanks to the larger 79 kilowatt-hour battery, the FIRE and ICE edition promises a driving range of up to 591 kilometers on the WLTP cycle. And when it is time to recharge, it supports direct current fast charging up to 185 kilowatts. That means you can go from ten percent to eighty percent charge in just around 26 minutes, which is plenty quick for road trip stops.
Volkswagen did not cut corners on equipment either. Each FIRE and ICE model includes sport suspension, adaptive cruise control, a head up display with augmented reality, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system. Other features include Park Assist Plus, rearview camera, Keyless access, and dual zone climate control—all standard.
What adds emotional weight to this release is the collaboration with the original fashion label behind the 1990s Golf Fire and Ice—BOGNER. Their influence is clear not just in the interior design but in the spirit of the vehicle itself. It celebrates individuality and attitude, aimed at drivers who want more than a typical electric car experience.
With only 1,990 units planned for production and a starting price of 56,020 Euros in Germany, the ID.3 GTX FIRE and ICE is both a collector’s item and a performance-oriented daily driver. Volkswagen managed to build something that honors its past while fully embracing the electric future.
So, what do you think? Would you daily this fiery electric icon or save it as a future classic?
