Ford Bronco New Energy Revealed: Battery, Range, and Camping Tech
China just met a very different kind of Bronco. Ford has revealed the Bronco New Energy, an electric family aimed squarely at Chinese buyers who want adventure styling with modern tech. Some fans have nicknamed it “Basecamp,” but the official name is Bronco New Energy, and it is a China-only project for now.
There are two powertrains. The battery electric vehicle uses a 105.4 kilowatt hour lithium iron phosphate battery and dual motor all wheel drive. On the China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, Ford is targeting up to 650 kilometers of range, which will translate to less on stricter test cycles. Filings point to roughly 232 kilowatts combined output, so think brisk, effortless passing and quiet cruising rather than raw Baja truck vibes.
If you want long legs without constant fast charging, the extended range electric vehicle pairs a 43.7 kilowatt hour battery with a 1.5 liter gasoline generator to keep the pack topped up. Ford quotes up to 136 miles of electric driving for daily errands and potentially about 758 miles of total range on the same local cycle for road trips. The wheels are still driven by electric motors, so it feels like an electric vehicle even when the generator is working in the background.
Underneath, this is not the United States body-on-frame Bronco. It rides on a unibody layout with a wheelbase around 116.1 inches, trading heavy-duty rock-crawling hardware for everyday comfort, space, and light-trail confidence. The stance is upright, the lines are square shouldered, and the details read “weekend out there” without pretending to be a trophy truck.
Technology is a headline feature. The Bronco New Energy shown in China wears a roof-mounted LiDAR and packs a network of sensors to support advanced driver assistance. Inside, Ford China leans into a “smart cockpit” approach with quick-access modes for naps, pets, and overnight camping, turning the Bronco into a quiet shelter with climate control and power management designed for real downtime.
Think of it as a road-trip and city-life companion with some trail detours built in. It is familiar Bronco attitude tuned for China’s charging map, commutes, and weekend getaways. Pricing is still to be announced, launch is planned for later in 2025, and Ford has not said anything about a North American release.
