Xiaomi SkyNomad N70 Max and N90 Max World Premiere

Xiaomi is expanding beyond electric cars with a new approach to plug in hybrid technology. The company’s new SkyNomad lineup introduces two extended range sport utility vehicles that are designed to deliver the driving experience of an electric vehicle while reducing concerns about charging during long trips. The first models, the SkyNomad N70 Max and the larger SkyNomad N90 Max, combine large battery packs with a gasoline powered range extender instead of relying on a traditional hybrid drivetrain.

One of the biggest highlights is the SkyNomad N70 Max, which Xiaomi says can travel up to 505 kilometers on electricity alone under the China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. If those figures hold up in real world use, it places the vehicle among the leaders in the extended range electric vehicle segment. During the official presentation, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun pointed out that this is the longest claimed electric only driving range currently offered by a production extended range vehicle.

Unlike conventional plug in hybrid vehicles that can send power from both the engine and electric motors directly to the wheels, the SkyNomad models primarily rely on electric motors for propulsion. Their 1.5 liter gasoline engine acts as a generator, producing electricity to recharge the battery and extend driving distance rather than serving as the main source of propulsion. This allows the vehicles to maintain the smooth and quiet driving characteristics that many buyers expect from fully electric vehicles.

Power comes from a 76 kilowatt hour nickel manganese cobalt battery pack in the N70 Max. Xiaomi paired that battery with a dual motor all wheel drive system producing a combined 310 kilowatts, which is equal to 416 horsepower. The front motor contributes 210 kilowatts, while the rear motor delivers another 100 kilowatts. Together, they provide strong acceleration while maintaining the efficiency expected from an electric focused platform.

Efficiency played a major role in the development of the SkyNomad platform. Xiaomi says the system can achieve energy consumption as low as 15.85 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers under the China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. To reach that figure, engineers combined silicon carbide power electronics, advanced thermal management, lightweight construction, and specially designed low rolling resistance tires.

The larger SkyNomad N90 Max shares much of its technology with the N70 Max but targets buyers who need additional passenger space. It also uses the 76 kilowatt hour battery pack and the same dual motor powertrain, producing 416 horsepower. Its electric only driving range is rated at 464 kilometers under the China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, while Xiaomi claims a combined driving range of up to 1,705 kilometers when the battery and fuel tank are both full.

Performance remains impressive despite the larger size. Xiaomi says the N90 Max can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 190 kilometers per hour. Inside, the full size sport utility vehicle offers a flexible 2 plus 2 plus 3 seating layout, allowing owners to carry up to 7 passengers while adjusting the second and third row seating positions for additional comfort or cargo capacity.

Charging speed was another area Xiaomi emphasized during the reveal. According to the company, the N90 Max can recover up to 285 kilometers of electric driving range in only 15 minutes. Charging from 20 percent to 80 percent takes approximately 18 minutes, making short charging stops much more practical for long distance travel.

Pricing also appears to position the SkyNomad models aggressively. The N70 Max opens at 259,900 yuan, while the larger N90 Max starts at 299,900 yuan. These initial prices apply to the highest trim levels, with additional lower priced versions expected when the lineup officially launches in September. Customers can already place refundable reservations in China with a 1,000 yuan deposit to secure an earlier production slot.

Xiaomi also used the launch event to showcase its confidence in vehicle safety. One demonstration featured the N90 Max carrying 7 occupants while traveling at 160 kilometers per hour before engineers simulated simultaneous blowouts of the front left and rear left tires. According to Xiaomi, the vehicle remained stable, allowing the driver to maintain control before bringing the sport utility vehicle to a safe stop.

With the SkyNomad lineup, Xiaomi is making it clear that its ambitions extend well beyond traditional battery electric vehicles. By combining long electric driving range, rapid charging, practical family transportation, and competitive pricing, the company is positioning itself as a serious contender in one of the fastest growing segments of the automotive market. As the official launch approaches, buyers around the world will be watching closely to see whether these impressive specifications translate into real world performance.
