Toyota’s GAZOO Racing engineers spent considerable time fine tuning the sports coupe to make it feel even more responsive, predictable, and enjoyable whether it is being driven on a winding road or at a race track.

One of the biggest improvements for 2027 centers on the driving experience itself. Engineers revised the relationship between accelerator input and torque delivery to create a smoother and more natural response. This allows drivers to better control the car when accelerating out of corners or during spirited driving sessions. Manual transmission models also benefit from refinements to the shifting mechanism, helping gear changes feel more precise and effortless.

The GR86 remains powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4 liter 4 cylinder boxer engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 pound feet of torque. Peak torque arrives at 3,700 revolutions per minute, helping deliver strong mid range performance and immediate response. Toyota estimates a 0 to 60 miles per hour time of 6.1 seconds for manual models and 6.6 seconds for automatic versions.

What continues to make the GR86 special is its lightweight design. The manual transmission model weighs only 2,811 pounds, while the automatic version comes in at 2,851 pounds. Lightweight construction remains a major priority, with aluminum body panels and carefully engineered structural components helping keep weight under control.

Drivers looking for even more capability can choose the available Performance Package. This package includes Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers, two upgrades that help improve stability, braking confidence, and overall chassis control. The combination is designed to provide better road contact while maintaining the engaging feedback that sports car enthusiasts expect.

Toyota also introduced a new exterior color called Thunder. The unique gray finish changes character depending on lighting conditions, highlighting the GR86’s sculpted body lines and aggressive stance. It gives the sports coupe a modern appearance while still maintaining its purposeful design.

Inside the cabin, Toyota has expanded customization options. A new Cockpit Red interior is now available, combining black Ultrasuede and red leather accents to create a sportier atmosphere. Buyers can also choose an all black interior featuring black upholstery, black stitching, and dark trim finishes. Premium models receive additional interior upgrades, including cast iron black finishes on key controls and switchgear.

Technology and safety also receive attention for 2027. Toyota improved the range of the stereo camera system used by the vehicle’s active safety technologies, helping the car better recognize vehicles ahead when using adaptive cruise control. A new monocular camera has also been added to improve object detection near intersections.

The standard safety suite includes Pre Collision Braking System, Pre Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Premium models also receive Rear Sonar Warning for additional assistance when reversing.
