Why Kia Dropped the Niro EV for 2026
Kia has introduced the updated 2026 Niro in South Korea, but this time the story is a little different. The compact sport utility vehicle that once offered multiple electrified choices is now being sold exclusively as a hybrid. The fully electric Niro EV is officially being phased out as Kia shifts its focus toward a new generation of purpose built electric vehicles.
When the Niro first arrived in 2016, it played an important role in Kia’s electrification journey. At the time, eco friendly vehicles were still unfamiliar to many drivers, and the Niro helped bridge that gap by offering hybrid, plug in hybrid, and fully electric versions in a practical crossover package. Over the years, the model became a global success, with more than 1.2 million units sold.
The second generation Niro, introduced in 2022, brought a completely new look inspired by Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy. This design language has since become the visual signature of the company’s latest electric vehicles, including the EV3, EV4, EV5, EV6, and EV9.
With the 2026 refresh, Kia is simplifying the lineup. The updated Niro is now powered by a 1.6 liter hybrid powertrain that promises strong efficiency along with improved refinement. Kia says the vehicle delivers class leading combined fuel economy while also offering updated technology, safety systems, and a more polished interior and exterior design.
Company executives explained that the decision to discontinue the Niro EV allows Kia to concentrate resources on its dedicated electric vehicle lineup. Models such as the EV3 and EV5 are designed from the ground up as electric vehicles, giving them better packaging, performance, and overall competitiveness in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
In South Korea, the new Niro hybrid starts at 28.85 million won, which is about $19,600, and climbs to 34.64 million won, or about $23,500, for the top Signature trim. Meanwhile, remaining Niro EV inventory will continue to be sold in markets such as the United States, where the electric version currently offers up to 253 miles of driving range.
