Volkswagen GROUP Shocks Auto Shanghai 2025
Volkswagen made a bold impression at Auto Shanghai 2025 during its Group Night event by revealing three striking concept vehicles. These models—ID. AURA, ID. ERA, and ID. EVO—are not just design studies. They are a preview of what is coming soon for Chinese consumers. Developed in partnership with FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Anhui, each concept was crafted with Chinese drivers in mind.
The ID. ERA from SAIC Volkswagen is a full-size sport utility vehicle with three rows of seats. What makes it stand out is its use of range extender technology. This vehicle combines a 300-kilometer electric range with a fuel-powered generator that recharges the battery during driving. Altogether, it can cover over 1,000 kilometers without needing to stop. It is a practical answer to range anxiety for long-distance travelers.
The ID. EVO, designed by Volkswagen Anhui, targets a younger generation looking for digital connectivity and bold style. This all-electric full-size sport utility vehicle rides on an 800-volt architecture, allowing for faster charging and smoother power delivery. Its electronic systems are zonally organized, enabling over-the-air updates and digital features that evolve over time.
Then comes the ID. AURA from FAW-Volkswagen. This electric notchback is tailored for the more budget-conscious A-segment. Despite being entry-level, it does not cut corners on technology. It is built on Volkswagen’s Compact Main Platform and includes a high-power artificial intelligence system for automated driving. The interior features a user interface inspired by smartphones, and a humanoid voice assistant lets drivers control most functions with ease.
Together, these three models demonstrate Volkswagen’s “In China, for China” strategy in action. By 2027, Volkswagen plans to release more than 30 new vehicles in China, including 20 new energy models. The concepts shown in Shanghai will evolve into production-ready vehicles built specifically to meet the demands of the world’s largest electric vehicle market.
