This Is NOT an STI, But It Might Be Better – WRX tS Spec B Revealed

Subaru has unveiled what may look like a new performance flagship, but looks can be deceiving. The Subaru WRX tS Spec B sports a dramatic rear wing, aggressive upgrades, and a motorsport vibe that will have many assuming it is a reborn STI. But it is not. Instead, it is Subaru’s latest attempt to offer premium performance features without touching the engine bay.

Set to launch in Australia later in 2025, the WRX tS Spec B continues to use the same 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer petrol engine. That means output remains at 202 kilowatts, which translates to around 270 horsepower, and torque stays steady at 350 Newton-meters or about 258 pound-feet. In other words, while it looks wilder, it is not faster.

What makes this version different is its hardware. Subaru is combining a suite of sought-after features that Australian WRX fans have been wanting in one package. A big win is the manual transmission, which is notably absent from the current WRX tS model sold in Australia. That version is limited to a continuously variable transmission only, leaving many enthusiasts cold. With the Spec B, drivers get a traditional six-speed manual and the performance feel they expect.

Another highlight is the expected addition of adaptive dampers, which until now have only been offered with the CVT-equipped tS models. This move would make the tS Spec B the only manual WRX in Australia with adjustable suspension. For drivers who care about handling and ride quality, that is a big deal.

Subaru is also equipping the car with 19-inch wheels, a unique Brembo braking system, and heavily bolstered Recaro front seats. While pricing and full details are yet to be announced, the parts list suggests a car tuned for serious road performance without stepping into true STI territory.

Unfortunately, those hoping for an STI comeback will need to keep waiting. Subaru has made it clear that emissions regulations have effectively killed off the STI for this generation. The brand has hinted at electrified future STI models, possibly with hybrid systems. But until then, this tS Spec B will be as close as it gets.

It might not be the return of the STI, but for those in Australia who want a WRX with real hardware upgrades, a manual gearbox, and daily usability, the Spec B looks like the smart pick.
