This Is Not a Normal Facelift for the 2026 S Class
Something about this update does not add up at first glance, because mid cycle refreshes are not supposed to feel like reinvention, yet this one quietly crosses that line.
Mercedes is preparing the most extensive facelift ever applied to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the scale of the changes explains why. Roughly 2700 parts are either brand new or significantly revised, which means more than half of the vehicle has been reengineered for the second phase of its life. That is not a visual refresh, that is a mechanical and technological reset disguised as a facelift.
Even before the official reveal, Mercedes hints at its design direction through carefully cut camouflage. The iconic three pointed star is now embedded directly into the headlights and taillights, signaling a shift in how the brand wants its flagship recognized at a glance. It is subtle, but unmistakably intentional, and it aligns the S Class with Mercedes newest design language without turning it into something flashy.
The deeper story lives under the hood. The S450 and S500 now use the updated M256 Evo inline six engine, which produces 443 pound feet of torque, with an overboost function that temporarily raises output to 472 pound feet. Power delivery feels more elastic, more confident, and more refined, even though Mercedes has not officially released horsepower figures yet. The outgoing S500 produced 442 horsepower, and expectations are that the new version will at least match that figure.
For buyers stepping up to the S580, the change is even more dramatic. Mercedes introduces the M177 Evo flat plane crank V8, a layout previously reserved for extreme performance models. Output climbs to 530 horsepower and 553 pound feet of torque, supported by a revised firing order, upgraded injection, and reworked intake and exhaust flow. Despite the added power, Mercedes claims improved efficiency, which speaks to how much engineering attention this engine received.
Electrification also takes a meaningful step forward. The S580e plug in hybrid gains a stronger electric motor and a larger battery, pushing combined output higher by 74 horsepower. Electric range is estimated to exceed 62 miles on the WLTP cycle, making it one of the most usable luxury plug in hybrids on the market.
Every gasoline version now includes particulate filters and pressurized fuel tanks, while diesel models adopt the new OM 656 Evo engine to meet upcoming emissions standards. Mercedes also becomes the first manufacturer to introduce an electrically heated catalytic converter in series production, reducing emissions immediately after cold starts.
Across the lineup, a 17 kilowatt starter generator and 48 volt electrical system smooth acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. Rear wheel steering is now standard, improving agility despite the car’s size, while the optional 10 degree system dramatically tightens the turning circle. The air suspension has been further refined, using cloud based road data to pre adjust damping before the car even reaches a speed bump.
The facelifted S Class debuts January 29, with the extended wheelbase Mercedes-Maybach version arriving later.
