This 800 Horsepower GT40 Might Be the Ultimate Restomod
The Ford GT40 remains one of the most celebrated race cars ever built. Its victories at Le Mans during the 1960s turned it into a legend and inspired countless recreations over the decades. Now, a company from South Africa has created a modern interpretation that combines classic styling with supercar-level performance.
The new Cape Advanced Vehicles GT MkII captures the spirit of the original GT40 while introducing technology that would have seemed impossible when the race car first appeared. From its lightweight construction to its advanced powertrain, this machine is designed to deliver performance far beyond what the original could achieve.
At the heart of the GT MkII is a twin-supercharged 4.2-liter V8 engine. The powerplant features forged internal components, direct fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication, a carbon-fiber intake manifold, and an Inconel exhaust system. Together, these upgrades help the engine produce an impressive 800 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.
Power is sent to all 4 wheels, a major departure from the rear-wheel-drive layout used by the historic GT40. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed single-clutch semi-automatic transmission, a dual-clutch gearbox, or a traditional manual transmission, allowing drivers to tailor the experience to their preferences.
Performance figures are equally impressive. Cape Advanced Vehicles claims the GT MkII can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.0 seconds and continue to a top speed exceeding 205 miles per hour. Those numbers place it firmly in modern supercar territory.
The vehicle’s lightweight construction plays a major role in its performance. It features a carbon-fiber composite body mounted on an aluminum and carbon-fiber spaceframe. As a result, the GT MkII weighs only 2,976 pounds, giving it an excellent power-to-weight ratio.
Although Cape Advanced Vehicles has not officially revealed the platform beneath the car, several clues suggest that an Audi R8 architecture may be hiding underneath the retro-inspired bodywork. Regardless of its origins, the final product successfully blends classic motorsport design with modern engineering.
