Subaru Finally Fixes the Forester Wilderness with Hybrid Power for 2027

The Subaru Wilderness lineup has quietly become one of the brand’s smartest moves. It is a simple idea, but it works every time. Take a practical SUV, give it real off road upgrades, and make it adventure ready straight from the factory. That formula continues with the latest addition, the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid.

This new version builds on what people already like about the Forester, but adds something that actually matters when you are heading farther off the grid. Range. By introducing a hybrid system, Subaru is not just improving efficiency, it is making the vehicle more usable for longer trips without constantly worrying about fuel stops.

Subaru says the Wilderness Hybrid brings about a 25 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the standard Wilderness model. While official numbers have not been confirmed yet, estimates suggest around 35 miles per gallon on the highway and just over 31 miles per gallon in the city. For a vehicle designed to handle rough terrain, those are strong numbers and make a noticeable difference in real world driving.

The off road hardware is still very much the focus. Ground clearance comes in at 9.3 inches, giving it the ability to clear obstacles with confidence. It rides on 17 inch wheels wrapped in all terrain tires, and the suspension is tuned to handle uneven surfaces without sacrificing daily comfort. Power also sees a small increase, now producing 194 horsepower compared to 180 horsepower in the non hybrid version.

That increase may not look dramatic on paper, but the hybrid system changes how the power is delivered. The added low end torque makes a big difference when crawling over rocks or climbing steep trails. It gives the vehicle a more responsive and controlled feel when traction is limited.

Visually, it stays true to the Wilderness identity. You still get the bold badging, rugged roof rails designed to support gear like rooftop tents, and the signature copper accents that set it apart from other trims. Inside, the cabin blends durability with modern technology. A large 11.6 inch center screen and a 12.3 inch digital driver display keep everything easy to access, while StarTex upholstery adds a practical, easy to clean surface for outdoor use. The upgraded Harman Kardon sound system rounds things out, making long drives more enjoyable.

Pricing has not been announced yet, but Subaru plans to release those details closer to launch. The Forester Wilderness Hybrid is expected to arrive in late 2026, and it looks like a natural evolution of a formula that already works.

If anything, this version feels like the one that should have existed from the beginning. It keeps the rugged capability people want, while finally adding the efficiency that makes it even more versatile for everyday life and weekend adventures.
