Rivian R2 Performance Launches Before $45K Model
Rivian is getting ready to bring its new electric sport utility vehicle to market, but buyers will not see the most affordable version right away. When the company first introduced the Rivian R2, it promised a starting price of $45,000. That figure still stands, although the base model will arrive later than expected. Rivian plans to launch the higher performance versions first, giving early buyers a taste of the brand’s newest technology and performance.
The first model to reach customers will be the R2 Performance, scheduled to go on sale this spring with a starting price of $57,990. This version uses two electric motors and all wheel drive to produce an impressive 656 horsepower. According to Rivian, the sport utility vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds while offering an estimated driving range of more than 300 miles.
The Performance trim also comes equipped with several distinctive features. It rides on 21 inch Sport wheels and includes semi active suspension, tow hooks, and yellow brake calipers with matching accents. Buyers can choose additional options such as 20 inch Adventure wheels, a spare tire, and a tow package. Rivian will also offer a limited Launch Package that includes a unique key fob, the tow package, and the exclusive Launch Green exterior color.
Following the Performance model will be the R2 Premium, which is expected to arrive in early 2027 with a starting price of $53,990. This version also uses a dual motor setup but produces 500 horsepower instead. It reaches 60 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds and shares many of the same features as the Performance version. However, it does not offer the semi active suspension option and comes standard with 20 inch wheels.
The R2 Standard lineup will include two versions designed to make the vehicle more accessible to a wider audience. The Long Range variant is scheduled to arrive during the first half of 2027 with a starting price of $47,900. It features a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels and produces 350 horsepower. This model can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds and is expected to deliver more than 320 miles of driving range. Nineteen inch wheels are standard, while 20 inch wheels and all wheel drive will be available as options.
The most affordable R2, priced at $45,000, will arrive later in 2027. It will also use a single rear mounted electric motor and is expected to offer more than 265 miles of range.
In terms of size, the Rivian R2 measures 66.9 inches tall, 84.7 inches wide with mirrors, and 185.9 inches long. That makes it slightly shorter in height than the Ford Bronco Sport and about 3 inches shorter in length than the four door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Despite its compact footprint, the R2 still promises impressive capability.
Ground clearance measures 9.6 inches, which is only 0.1 inches less than the Wrangler Unlimited Sport. The vehicle offers a 25 degree approach angle, a 26 degree departure angle, and a 20.6 degree breakover angle. Inside, Rivian designed the cabin with practicality in mind. The R2 can provide up to 90.1 cubic feet of cargo space, with 28.7 cubic feet available behind the rear seats, making it ready for both daily driving and weekend adventures.
