Renault Just Reinvented The City Car With This EV

The return of a truly affordable electric city car has been a long time coming, and now it feels like it is finally happening. The new Renault Twingo E-Tech electric is stepping into a space that many brands have quietly walked away from, bringing back the idea of a compact, practical, and genuinely accessible vehicle designed for everyday urban life.

What stands out immediately is how this car stays true to its roots while still feeling completely modern. The original Twingo built its reputation on being fun, clever, and surprisingly versatile, and that same spirit is clearly alive here. The design feels playful without trying too hard, with smooth curves, expressive lighting, and a friendly front end that almost feels like it is smiling back at you.

But this is not just about looks. The real story is how much thought has gone into making this car work in the real world. Despite measuring just 3.79 meters in length, the interior space feels closer to something from a larger segment. Rear passengers benefit from up to 16 cm of knee room, and the clever sliding rear seats allow you to prioritize either passenger comfort or cargo space depending on the situation.

When you need to carry more, the flexibility becomes even more impressive. Folding the rear seats opens up over 1000 liters of space, and with the front passenger seat folded in higher trims, you can carry items up to 2 meters long. That is something you simply would not expect from a car this size.

On the electric side, Renault has taken a very smart approach. Instead of chasing massive battery sizes, the Twingo uses a lightweight and efficient setup with a 60 kilowatt motor producing 82 horsepower. The lithium iron phosphate battery delivers up to 263 kilometers of range, which is perfectly suited for daily city driving while keeping costs under control.

Charging and usability are also clearly designed with everyday life in mind. The integration of Google built-in through the OpenR Link system brings familiar tools like Google Maps and voice assistance directly into the car, making navigation and trip planning feel seamless. The system even helps plan charging stops and optimize routes based on real time conditions.

Driving in the city feels effortless thanks to features like the One Pedal function, which allows the car to slow down and stop using regenerative braking alone. It is the kind of feature that quickly becomes second nature, especially in stop and go traffic.

Safety and convenience have not been overlooked either. With up to 24 driver assistance systems, including parking aids, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring, this small car delivers technology typically found in much larger and more expensive vehicles.

What really makes this car interesting is the bigger picture. Renault has managed to develop it in just 100 weeks, cutting development time significantly while also reducing production complexity. At the same time, the use of more sustainable materials and a smaller carbon footprint shows that affordability does not have to come at the expense of environmental responsibility.

At a starting price below 20000 euros, the Twingo E-Tech electric feels like a genuine attempt to bring electric mobility back to everyday drivers. It is not trying to be everything at once. Instead, it focuses on doing the basics extremely well, and that is exactly why it stands out.
