Porsche has spent years proving that an electric sports car can deliver incredible performance, but the company knows that speed alone is not everything. Many driving enthusiasts enjoy the mechanical connection that comes from shifting gears, hearing the engine climb through the rev range, and feeling every change in acceleration. That is exactly what inspired the new E Shift system for the latest Taycan lineup.

Unlike a traditional transmission, the Taycan does not actually need multiple gears to deliver its impressive acceleration. Another important feature is the simulated engine braking effect. Interestingly, E Shift is not designed to make the Taycan quicker. In fact, the brief pause between virtual gear changes means maximum acceleration is slightly reduced compared with leaving the power delivery uninterrupted. Porsche believes the added emotion, involvement, and connection with the car are worth that small tradeoff.
