New Tesla Model Y L Revealed for America With 6 Seats and 325 Miles of Range
Tesla has officially expanded its Model Y lineup in the United States with the launch of the new Model Y L, giving buyers a more spacious option without stepping up to the much more expensive Model X. The new model is designed for families who need extra seating and cargo room while keeping the familiar driving experience that has made the Model Y one of the world’s best-selling electric vehicles.
Unlike the previous optional 7-seat version of the Model Y, the Model Y L was developed from the beginning to provide a more comfortable third row. Tesla stretched the vehicle to create additional interior space and introduced a premium 6-seat layout featuring individual captain’s chairs in the second row. The result is a cabin that feels much more upscale while making it easier for passengers to access the third row.
The Model Y L is launching first as a special Launch Series model priced at $61,990 before incentives. Orders are now open across the United States and Puerto Rico, with the first customer deliveries expected to begin in October. The new model arrives at an important time for Tesla as competition in the electric sport utility vehicle market continues to grow.
From the outside, the Model Y L maintains the familiar styling of the refreshed Model Y while incorporating subtle changes that improve practicality. The wheelbase has been extended, the overall body is longer, and the roofline is slightly taller to provide additional headroom for passengers sitting in the rear. These changes are designed to improve comfort without dramatically changing the vehicle’s sleek appearance.
Inside, the biggest transformation is immediately noticeable. Instead of a traditional second-row bench, Tesla has installed two individual captain’s chairs that provide more personal space and easier access to the third row. The additional cabin length also gives passengers in the rear a much more usable seating area compared with the previous 7-seat configuration.
Technology remains one of the Model Y L’s strongest selling points. Drivers receive Tesla’s large center touchscreen, while passengers in the rear benefit from their own display for entertainment and climate controls. Heated and ventilated seating, multiple Universal Serial Bus Type C charging ports, premium audio, wireless connectivity, and numerous storage compartments help make long road trips more comfortable for everyone on board.
Performance remains impressive despite the larger size. Every United States Model Y L comes equipped with Tesla’s dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering an estimated 325 miles of driving range. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds, proving that family practicality does not come at the expense of performance.
Cargo capacity has also improved thanks to the longer body. Even with three rows of seating, owners gain additional flexibility for luggage, groceries, sports equipment, or weekend travel. When extra storage is needed, the rear seats fold flat to create a significantly larger cargo area.
Tesla is also adding extra value to the Launch Series by including exclusive badging, premium interior finishes, Full Self Driving capability, and 12 months of complimentary Supercharging. These features help distinguish the launch model from future versions that are expected to arrive later at different price points.
The arrival of the Model Y L places Tesla directly against larger electric family vehicles such as the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9, and Rivian R1S. While each competitor offers its own strengths, Tesla continues to rely on its efficient powertrain, extensive Supercharger network, advanced software, and strong performance to attract buyers looking for an electric sport utility vehicle with three practical rows of seating.
For many shoppers, the Model Y L may represent the sweet spot in Tesla’s lineup. It delivers much of the practicality that families have been asking for while remaining more affordable than the Model X. As deliveries begin later this year, it will become clear whether the longer, roomier Model Y can continue Tesla’s success in one of the fastest-growing segments of the electric vehicle market.
