New Porsche Flat-8 Supercar S1 Rumored
Porsche could be preparing one of its most interesting performance cars in years. According to recent reports from Germany, the company is developing a new flagship supercar that is reportedly known internally as the S1. The biggest surprise is what may be sitting behind the driver: an 8-cylinder horizontally opposed gasoline engine. Porsche has not officially confirmed the project, so the S1 name and specifications should still be treated as rumors.
The new model would reportedly sit above the 911 and could carry a starting price of approximately €500,000. Rather than simply creating another extreme version of the 911, Porsche is reportedly considering a standalone supercar with its own architecture. Some reports suggest that a production version would not arrive until after 2030.
The flat-8 idea has some real history behind it. Porsche previously experimented with a Cayman-based prototype powered by a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-8 producing approximately 750 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. That experimental engine could reportedly rev to 9,000 revolutions per minute, but the program never reached production.
A modern version could give Porsche something completely different from the 918 Spyder, which combined a naturally aspirated V8 with electric motors. It would also represent a major change from the fully electric Mission X concept Porsche presented in 2023.
More information could emerge very soon. Porsche is holding its Capital Markets Day on October 7, 2026, where Chief Executive Officer Michael Leiters is expected to discuss the company’s future strategy. Reports suggest investors could receive an early look at the S1 project, although Porsche has not announced that the car will actually appear at the event.
If the reports prove accurate, Porsche may finally be preparing a new flagship worthy of following the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, but this time with an engine configuration never before offered in a production Porsche road car.
