New Nio Firefly EV – Mini Rival with Big Features!
Nio has officially introduced its new sub-brand, Firefly, aimed at delivering premium compact electric vehicles for urban drivers. This latest addition to the Nio lineup is designed to rival competitors like BMW’s Mini and Mercedes-Benz’s Smart. Firefly is set to hit the market in April 2025, with a starting price of approximately 20,400 dollars in China.
The first model under the Firefly brand is a stylish five-door hatchback that has been carefully crafted under the direction of Nio’s Vice President of Design, Kris Tomasson. It boasts a sleek, modern look with a compact yet spacious design. In terms of dimensions, the Firefly measures 4,003 millimeters in length, 1,781 millimeters in width, and 1,557 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 2,615 millimeters. This allows for a comfortable interior while maintaining a compact footprint for city driving.
Under the hood, the Firefly is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 141 horsepower, allowing the vehicle to reach a top speed of 150 kilometers per hour. It is equipped with a 42.1 kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by Sunwoda, offering an estimated range of 420 kilometers based on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle standards. This ensures that the Firefly is practical for daily commutes as well as longer city drives without the need for frequent charging.
For cargo space, the Firefly provides a convenient 92-liter front trunk, commonly referred to as a frunk, along with a rear cargo area that expands up to 1,250 liters when the rear seats are folded. This makes it a practical choice for those who need a versatile vehicle for urban living.
Safety is a top priority for Nio, and the Firefly reflects that commitment. It features a robust structure with 83.4 percent high-strength steel, resulting in impressive torsional rigidity of 35,700 Newton-meters per degree. The vehicle also includes nine airbags and an advanced driver assistance system to enhance safety. Its suspension system has been developed in partnership with Multimatic, incorporating a five-link independent rear setup and an ideal 50 to 50 weight distribution for improved handling and stability.
Nio has big plans for Firefly beyond the Chinese market, with a European launch scheduled for the first half of 2025. However, new European Union tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles could impact pricing and competitiveness. Despite this, Nio remains confident that Firefly’s blend of technology, affordability, and premium design will appeal to urban drivers looking for a stylish and efficient electric vehicle.
Another key feature of the Firefly is Nio’s battery-swapping technology. Initially, the Firefly will have access to dedicated swapping stations in select cities, with plans to integrate into Nio’s fifth-generation battery swap network. This feature could be a game-changer for customers who prefer quick and convenient battery swaps over traditional charging.
