New MG 4X Could Change Affordable Electric SUVs

New MG 4X Could Change Affordable Electric SUVs

MG is continuing its aggressive push into the electric vehicle market with the launch of the new MG 4X in China. The compact sport utility vehicle arrives with a modern design, advanced technology, and pricing that could attract buyers looking for an affordable electric alternative. Starting at just 92,800 yuan during the promotional period, the MG 4X immediately positions itself as one of the more competitive electric sport utility vehicles in its segment.

The new model is built on SAIC’s Nebula electric platform and uses a rear wheel drive layout, something that is still relatively uncommon in affordable electric crossovers. MG also equipped the vehicle with a five link independent rear suspension, giving the 4X a more premium setup compared to many rivals that still use simpler suspension systems. This combination could help the vehicle stand out for drivers who want a balance between comfort and handling.

From the outside, the MG 4X follows the styling direction seen on other recent MG electric vehicles. The front end features a closed grille design with slim daytime running lights and an illuminated MG logo that gives the sport utility vehicle a futuristic appearance. The dimensions also place it directly in the heart of the compact crossover category, offering enough interior room for families while remaining practical for city driving.

Inside the cabin, MG focused heavily on technology and connectivity. Drivers get a large 10.25 inch digital instrument display along with a floating 15.6 inch infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard. The system supports Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, Carlink connectivity, and integration with Oppo smart devices. One of the more interesting additions is the integration of the Doubao artificial intelligence language model, allowing more advanced voice interaction throughout the cabin.

Performance varies depending on the chosen configuration. Buyers can select between versions producing 168 horsepower or 201 horsepower. The MG 4X also offers two battery options. The first is a 53.9 kilowatt hour liquid solid state battery with a claimed CLTC driving range of 510 kilometers. The second uses a 64.2 kilowatt hour lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by CATL and increases the range to 610 kilometers.

One detail attracting attention is the use of the semi solid state battery in the lower range model. While solid state battery technology is often promoted as the future of electric vehicles, the real world advantage here appears limited for now. The smaller battery pack is reportedly only around 70 kilograms lighter than the larger lithium iron phosphate pack, raising questions about whether current semi solid state technology delivers meaningful benefits at this stage.

MG is also placing a strong emphasis on intelligent driving technology. Entry level models come equipped with Level 2 driver assistance features supported by cameras and ultrasonic radars. Higher trims step up to a more advanced system with additional sensors, millimeter wave radars, and enhanced highway driving assistance along with intelligent parking features.

The launch of the MG 4X comes at an important time for SAIC and the MG brand. SAIC recently reported strong new energy vehicle sales, while MG continues expanding globally and gaining traction in Europe. With competitive pricing, modern technology, and long driving range figures, the MG 4X could become another important player in China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market.
