New Mercedes-Benz S Class Might Be the Perfect Luxury Sedan
The Mercedes Benz S Class has always been more than just a luxury sedan. It has been a statement of status, comfort, and engineering confidence for decades. Even as rivals from BMW and Genesis continue to close the gap, the S Class still feels like the benchmark everyone else is chasing. For the 2027 model year, Mercedes is clearly reminding the world that it has no intention of stepping aside.
At first glance, the new S Class feels familiar in the best way. The shape is unmistakably Mercedes, but the details are sharper and more intentional. The grille is slightly larger, and each vertical slat is lined with tiny three pointed stars that feel excessive yet perfectly on brand. The headlights are refined, the bumper is cleaner, and the overall look balances elegance with authority without trying too hard.
From the side, the S Class keeps its classic proportions. The tall greenhouse gives both front and rear passengers an open, airy feel, while the roofline flows smoothly into the trunk. Out back, the design borrows cues from the latest E Class, with wide horizontal taillights featuring star shaped lighting elements connected by a thin chrome strip. Subtle chrome details around the exhaust outlets finish things off nicely.
Inside, Mercedes makes a noticeable shift in philosophy. The oversized Hyperscreen setup has been replaced by what the brand now calls the Superscreen. Instead of one massive glass panel, the layout feels more deliberate and refined. A 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the driver, a 14.3 inch central touchscreen handles infotainment duties, and a 12.3 inch passenger display adds an extra layer of interaction. The latest MBUX system brings generative artificial intelligence, native Google Maps, and improved personalization. Rear passengers are not left out, with dual 13.1 inch displays and fully detachable MBUX remotes. Streaming apps like Disney Plus and YouTube are now built directly into the system.
The biggest talking point, though, lives under the hood. The S580 introduces an all new 4.0 liter V8 with a flat plane crankshaft, something almost unheard of in a full size luxury sedan. Output is rated at 530 horsepower and 553 pound feet of torque, with a mild hybrid system adding an extra 23 horsepower. Mercedes estimates a 0 to 60 miles per hour time of just 3.9 seconds, which is genuinely impressive for a car of this size.
The S500 remains the entry point but still delivers serious performance. Its updated inline six engine produces 442 horsepower and 443 pound feet of torque, with an overtorque function pushing torque output to 472 pound feet. Despite being the base model, it reaches 60 miles per hour in an estimated 4.3 seconds and tops out at 130 miles per hour.
Mercedes also keeps a plug in hybrid option in the lineup. The S580e combines an inline six engine with an electric motor for a total system output of 576 horsepower and 553 pound feet of torque. While official electric only range figures have not been released yet, Mercedes expects it to surpass the previous model’s 46 mile rating.
All versions send power to all four wheels through a 9 speed automatic transmission. Airmatic air suspension comes standard across the board, while E Active Body Control remains available for those who want the smoothest possible ride. Pricing has not been announced, but with the current model starting at $120,850, expectations are already set.
