New Mercedes Benz CLE Coupe Facelift Revealed With Major Styling Changes

The first prototype images of the updated Mercedes Benz CLE coupe have finally surfaced, and even though heavy camouflage is still doing most of the talking, there is already plenty to unpack. These early sightings give us a solid idea of where Mercedes Benz is heading with the refreshed CLE, and the changes look more meaningful than a simple cosmetic update.

At first glance, the front end immediately stands out despite being almost fully covered. The new headlights are clearly different, and they appear to adopt the brand’s latest design language with LED signatures inspired by the iconic three pointed star. This design cue has already been rolled out on newer Mercedes Benz models, and it looks like the CLE will not be left behind. The headlights themselves also seem to have a sharper outline, hinting at a more aggressive and modern face.

Another noticeable change comes from the radiator grille. It appears slightly taller than before, which gives the coupe a stronger and more upright stance. There are also strong indications that a black trim surround will be added around the grille, mirroring the look seen on the latest E Class and the upcoming refreshed S Class. This subtle detail could play a big role in making the CLE feel more premium and visually connected to the rest of the lineup.

Around the back, the prototypes still wear bodywork identical to the current model, but history tells us that will not stay that way. Mercedes Benz is expected to update the taillights with new internal graphics, once again featuring the three pointed star motif. This would help visually tie the front and rear together while giving the CLE a more distinctive nighttime signature.

Under the skin, the Mercedes Benz CLE continues to ride on the Modular Rear Architecture platform. This is the same rear wheel drive focused structure that underpins every new Mercedes Benz performance and luxury model introduced this decade. It is designed to support a wide range of powertrains while delivering improved rigidity, handling balance, and refinement.

Engine options are expected to remain familiar, which is good news for buyers who appreciate variety. Entry level diesel versions are likely to continue using a 2.0 liter engine producing 200 horsepower in the CLE 220 d. Petrol variants should start with a 2.0 liter unit making 204 horsepower in the CLE 200. These engines may see small power bumps, but the real excitement sits higher up the range.

Performance fans will once again have access to a 3.0 liter inline six engine in the CLE 53 from Mercedes AMG Aufrecht Melcher Grossaspach. In its current form, this setup delivers 449 horsepower and 560 Newton meters of torque, making it a serious grand touring coupe with everyday usability. Mercedes Benz is also actively testing an even more extreme CLE 63, which is expected to abandon the previous smaller displacement approach in favor of a brand new V eight engine. That alone signals a major shift in philosophy and could make the CLE 63 one of the most exciting coupes in its segment.

All signs point toward the updated Mercedes Benz CLE making its official debut next year. While camouflage still hides many of the final details, these early prototypes already suggest a more confident design, updated lighting technology, and a powertrain lineup that balances efficiency with genuine performance.
