New BMW X5 M G95: What We Know So Far
BMW is preparing a new generation of the X5, and one of the most interesting models expected to follow is the next BMW X5 M. Known internally as the G95, the high performance sport utility vehicle has not been officially revealed, but prototypes and recent reports are beginning to give us an idea of what BMW M may have planned.
The new X5 M is expected to continue offering a gasoline powered option, which is good news for enthusiasts worried that BMW might turn its performance sport utility vehicle completely electric. Current reports suggest BMW could retain its 4.4 liter twin turbocharged S68 V8 engine and pair it with a 48 volt mild hybrid system.
Power is rumored to remain around the 600 horsepower mark, with some reports pointing to approximately 618 horsepower. That number has not been confirmed by BMW, so it should be treated as an early estimate. What may matter more is BMW’s decision to avoid an extremely heavy plug in hybrid system. A lighter setup could help preserve the sharp handling and aggressive personality that have made the X5 M so popular.
At the same time, BMW is reportedly working on a fully electric X5 M. This version could become the real performance monster of the family. Rumors suggest a 4 motor setup with individual control of each wheel and output potentially reaching somewhere around 800 to 900 horsepower. BMW has not confirmed those figures, but the company’s next generation electric M technology has been developed with extremely high performance in mind.
The exterior should also take a major step forward. Test vehicles point toward a more aggressive front fascia, large cooling openings, massive brakes, performance wheels and M specific aerodynamic changes. The cabin should adopt much of the new technology introduced with the latest X5 while adding M specific displays, seats, controls and driving modes.
Timing remains one of the biggest questions. Although the new generation X5 arrives for the 2027 model year, reports indicate the full G95 X5 M could follow later, potentially making it a 2028 model.
If the rumors prove accurate, buyers could eventually face an unusual choice: a traditional V8 powered X5 M or an incredibly powerful electric version. Either way, BMW appears determined to keep the X5 M near the top of the high performance sport utility vehicle category.
