New BMW M5 and 5-series Update Render Shows Major Neue Klasse Design Shift

BMW is getting ready to give its high performance sports sedan a serious refresh, and recent spy photos are finally giving a clearer picture of where the design is headed. Even though early renderings surfaced nearly a year ago, these new prototypes reveal meaningful changes that make the upcoming update feel more concrete and closer to production.

The biggest transformation is happening at the front. BMW appears to be moving the sedan toward its Neue Klasse design language, which brings a cleaner and more technical look. The headlights stand out immediately, featuring sharp diagonal daytime running lights that give the car a more focused expression. Some test vehicles also show added elements that resemble traditional kidney grille outlines, though there is still debate about whether those pieces are final design cues or simply camouflage meant to throw off photographers.

Around back, BMW seems to be taking a more restrained approach. The most noticeable update is the taillight design, which now appears as a single slim horizontal light bar that stretches across the rear and subtly widens at the edges. It is a modern look that fits the direction BMW has been taking across its lineup, without completely reinventing the car’s rear profile.

That performance does not come without compromise. The current generation tips the scales at 2445 kilograms, which is 474 kilograms heavier than the previous version. BMW is expected to address this balance of power and weight as competition heats up, especially with new high performance sedans on the horizon.

The updated model is expected to make its official debut closer to 2027.
