New 2028 Mitsubishi L200 – Is This the Next Triton?
The Mitsubishi L200, also known as the Triton in many markets, could be heading toward a major update around 2028. While Mitsubishi has not officially revealed the facelifted pickup, early independent renderings and recent reports give us an interesting idea of how the popular truck could evolve.
One of the biggest clues may come from the new Mitsubishi Pajero. Since the Pajero and Triton share Mitsubishi’s ladder frame architecture, future versions of the pickup could borrow some of the sport utility vehicle’s newer design ideas. Renderings imagine the L200 with a wider front grille, slimmer upper lighting and distinctive vertical light elements that give the truck a tougher and more modern appearance.
The overall shape is expected to remain familiar because this would likely be a major facelift rather than an entirely new generation. Mitsubishi could update the wheels, bumpers, exterior trim and rear lighting while keeping much of the current cab and cargo bed structure.
Under the hood, diesel power is expected to remain important. The current Triton uses a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder turbodiesel engine, with the most powerful versions producing around 204 horsepower and 470 Newton meters of torque. Future versions could benefit from updated turbocharger technology and other improvements aimed at efficiency and response.
Electrification is another possibility. Mitsubishi has previously discussed expanding electrified powertrains across its lineup, making some form of hybrid Triton increasingly believable. A plug in hybrid version could eventually become particularly interesting for markets with stricter emissions requirements, although Mitsubishi has not confirmed such a model for 2028.
Inside, the L200 could receive a larger infotainment display, a more advanced digital instrument cluster and updated driver assistance technology. Improvements to materials and comfort would also help Mitsubishi compete against increasingly sophisticated midsize pickups.
There is even speculation about a more serious Ralliart version, potentially giving Mitsubishi a tougher performance focused truck. For now, however, that remains a rumor.
The renderings are not official Mitsubishi images, but they provide an interesting look at where the L200 could be heading. If the next update combines Pajero inspired styling, improved technology and electrified powertrain options, the 2028 Mitsubishi L200 could become one of the most interesting updates yet for Mitsubishi’s global pickup.
