New 2027 BMW X5 Is Unlike Any BMW Before It
The BMW X5 has been one of the most important luxury sport utility vehicles on the market for more than 25 years, and now BMW is preparing to launch what could be its most advanced version yet. The all new 2027 BMW X5 is entering the final phase of development as engineers complete calibration and testing work around BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. While previous generations focused on refining performance, luxury, and technology, the next generation X5 takes a much bigger step forward by offering an unprecedented range of powertrain options.
For the first time, buyers will be able to choose from 5 different drive system technologies. Whether customers prefer traditional internal combustion power, plug in hybrid efficiency, battery electric driving, or even hydrogen fuel cell technology, BMW plans to offer an X5 that fits virtually every need.
One of the biggest headlines surrounding the new model is the arrival of the fully electric BMW iX5. This vehicle introduces BMW’s sixth generation eDrive technology and serves as one of the most important electric vehicles the company has ever developed. The new system uses advanced cylindrical battery cells and an 800 volt electrical architecture designed to improve efficiency, charging performance, and overall driving dynamics.
The BMW iX5 60 xDrive features the largest battery ever installed in a fully electric BMW production model. In the United States, usable battery capacity reaches 144 kilowatt hours, while European models receive 141 kilowatt hours of usable energy. The hydrogen model combines a fuel cell system, a compact high voltage battery, and an innovative hydrogen storage solution called the BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage system. Instead of relying on a traditional tank arrangement, BMW engineers developed a system consisting of 7 carbon fiber reinforced high pressure tanks integrated into a durable metal structure. This packaging solution allows the vehicle to maintain interior practicality while efficiently storing hydrogen fuel. An additional advantage is manufacturing flexibility, since hydrogen powered models can be assembled on the same production line as electric, hybrid, and combustion powered variants.
Performance and driving enjoyment remain a major focus despite the expansion into new powertrain technologies. BMW is introducing its new Heart of Joy control system, developed as part of the Neue Klasse technology program. This advanced control unit processes information and reacts up to 10 times faster than previous vehicle management systems.
The Heart of Joy coordinates steering, braking, power delivery, charging, and energy recuperation functions in milliseconds. For electric models such as the iX5, this results in smoother acceleration, more natural braking feel, and greater energy recovery during deceleration. In hybrid and combustion powered versions, the technology enhances traction, stability, and handling precision under a wide range of driving conditions.
The new X5 also receives significant chassis upgrades. Standard equipment includes adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers that can adjust individually for each wheel. BMW engineers have targeted near perfect 50:50 weight distribution to maximize comfort and agility. Buyers will also be able to equip wheels measuring up to 23 inches in diameter, giving the vehicle an even more aggressive stance.
Customers seeking maximum performance can choose Adaptive Chassis Control Professional. This optional package adds two axle air suspension, Integral Active Steering, active roll stabilization, and additional suspension enhancements that improve both ride comfort and cornering capability.
Technology extends beyond performance. The 2027 BMW X5 introduces a completely new generation of driver assistance systems derived from BMW’s Neue Klasse development program. These systems operate at Society of Automotive Engineers Level 2 capability while focusing heavily on cooperation between driver and vehicle rather than replacing the driver entirely.
One standout feature is BMW Symbiotic Drive, which allows the driver and vehicle systems to work together more naturally. Drivers can make steering, braking, and acceleration inputs without immediately disengaging assistance features. This creates a more seamless and confidence inspiring driving experience.
Available Motorway and City Assistant technology expands functionality even further. Features include Entry to Exit motorway guidance and Address to Address urban driving assistance. These systems help reduce driver workload while maintaining active driver involvement.
Safety technology has also been enhanced. The Lane Keeping Assistant can now evaluate steering behavior and driver attention before determining whether intervention is necessary. Additional systems include Lane Change Warning, Side Collision Warning with steering assistance, Crossing Traffic Warning, automated evasive maneuver support, and automatic braking functions when entering roads or exiting parking spaces.
The new BMW Panoramic iDrive interface serves as the command center for these advanced technologies. Clear displays and intuitive controls ensure drivers can easily access information while maintaining focus on the road.
