New 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive Revealed With 469 HP
BMW has officially pulled the covers off the new 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive, and this is much more than an electric version of the familiar 3 Series. The new i3 represents one of the biggest changes to BMW’s sport sedan in decades, bringing the company’s Neue Klasse technology, a completely new electrical architecture, a new interior concept, and a fresh design language to one of its most important models.
The headline model at launch is the BMW i3 50 xDrive. It uses 2 electric motors, with one driving the rear axle and another supporting the front axle to provide all wheel drive. Together, the system produces 469 horsepower and 475 pound feet of torque. That is enough to take the electric sedan from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds.
Power is only part of the story. BMW has equipped the i3 50 xDrive with a large 108.7 kilowatt hour high voltage battery using its 6th generation electric drive technology. Under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure, BMW quotes a maximum range of up to 567 miles, depending on configuration and conditions.
The new electrical system is based around an 800 volt architecture, and that makes a major difference when it is time to recharge. At a sufficiently powerful direct current fast charger, the i3 50 xDrive can accept as much as 400 kilowatts. BMW says 10 minutes of charging can add as much as 263 miles of driving range under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure.
The drivetrain itself also takes an interesting approach. The rear axle uses an electrically excited synchronous motor as the primary source of propulsion, while a compact asynchronous motor at the front axle joins in when additional traction and all wheel drive are required. This allows BMW to combine strong performance with efficiency instead of simply relying on 2 permanently active motors.
But BMW clearly wants the i3 to feel like a proper 3 Series rather than an electric car that happens to wear a familiar badge. A major part of that effort is a new control system BMW calls Heart of Joy. This high performance computer brings several driving functions together, including propulsion, braking, energy recuperation and vehicle dynamics. The goal is faster and more precise coordination between the car’s major systems.
Visually, the new i3 introduces a noticeably different interpretation of the traditional BMW sport sedan. The proportions remain recognizable, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs, a cabin positioned toward the rear and pronounced wheel arches. However, the surfaces are cleaner and the front end is dramatically simplified.
The traditional BMW kidney grille and headlights have been brought together into a wide horizontal design element. Vertical daytime running lights give the car its own identity, while the front profile retains the familiar shark nose influence. Flush fitting door handles clean up the side profile, and the rear uses 3 dimensional lighting elements that extend toward the shoulders of the body to emphasize the car’s width.
Inside, the transformation is even more significant. BMW Panoramic iDrive becomes a central part of the cabin experience, combining a wide information display positioned close to the base of the windshield with a centrally mounted touchscreen. The idea is to place important information closer to the driver’s natural line of sight while reducing the need for a conventional instrument cluster.
BMW Operating System X supports the new interface, while the cabin continues BMW’s driver focused philosophy. The result is an interior that looks considerably more futuristic without abandoning the basic idea of a cockpit built around the person behind the wheel.
The i3 also introduces BMW’s latest driver assistance technology. BMW Symbiotic Drive is designed to create a more natural relationship between driver input and assistance systems, while available Level 2 Plus automated driving technology expands the car’s highway assistance capabilities.
The i3 50 xDrive will not be alone. BMW is also introducing the i3 40 xDrive, which produces 374 horsepower and 520 Newton meters of torque. That version uses an 82.8 kilowatt hour battery and can travel up to 441 miles under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure. BMW has also confirmed that the more powerful i3 M60 xDrive will join the range later.
What makes the 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive particularly important is what it represents for the future of the 3 Series. BMW is not simply replacing the gasoline powered 3 Series with an electric sedan. Instead, electric and combustion models are becoming part of the same new generation, sharing a common design identity while using very different powertrains.
With 469 horsepower, all wheel drive, rapid 400 kilowatt charging and a maximum quoted range approaching 567 miles under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure, the new i3 50 xDrive arrives with some serious numbers. But its bigger job may be proving that the character that made the 3 Series successful can survive the transition into BMW’s Neue Klasse era.
