Toyota has officially revealed the all-new 2026 RAV4 GR Sport, and for Australian buyers it marks a major milestone. Not only is it the first GR Sport version of the RAV4 to reach Australia, but it also arrives as the flagship of the lineup with Toyota’s first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle version of the popular sport utility vehicle for the Australian market.

Designed to combine everyday practicality with noticeably stronger performance, the Australian-specification RAV4 GR Sport introduces a more athletic personality while keeping the efficiency that has made the RAV4 one of Toyota’s best-selling vehicles around the world.

Power comes from Toyota’s latest 2.5-liter 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid system paired with all-wheel drive. The system combines a naturally aspirated gasoline engine producing 105 kilowatts, equal to 141 horsepower, with a powerful front electric motor delivering 151.4 kilowatts, or about 203 horsepower. A second electric motor mounted on the rear axle contributes another 40.7 kilowatts, or approximately 55 horsepower, providing electronic all-wheel drive and improved traction.

Working together, the complete hybrid system produces an impressive combined output of 227 kilowatts, which is equivalent to approximately 304 horsepower. Toyota has not released a combined torque figure for the complete system, but the instant torque provided by the electric motors delivers stronger acceleration and more immediate response than the conventional hybrid models. The front electric motor generates approximately 270 Newton meters of torque, while the rear motor contributes approximately 121 Newton meters, helping provide confident performance in a wide variety of driving conditions.

Energy is stored in a large 22.7 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery positioned beneath the rear floor, preserving cabin and cargo space while lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity. Australian customers can recharge the battery in about 2.5 hours using an 11 kilowatt alternating current charger, while a 50 kilowatt direct current fast charger can replenish the battery to 80 percent in approximately 28 minutes.

Drivers can choose between Electric Vehicle mode, Automatic Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Electric Vehicle mode, or traditional Hybrid Electric Vehicle mode depending on driving conditions. The Australian-specification RAV4 GR Sport is capable of traveling up to 144 kilometers on the New European Driving Cycle or approximately 113 kilometers on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure using electric power alone before the gasoline engine is needed.

Toyota has also focused heavily on making the GR Sport feel noticeably different from the standard RAV4. The suspension has been specifically retuned with revised springs and dampers, while the front and rear tracks are 20 millimeters wider for improved stability during spirited driving. Engineers also added a front performance damper, reinforced the rear suspension brace, and recalibrated the electric power steering to provide more feedback when Sport mode is selected.

Stopping power has also been upgraded to match the additional performance. Larger ventilated brake discs and red-painted GR brake calipers improve both braking confidence and visual appeal.

Visually, the RAV4 GR Sport immediately stands apart from the rest of the lineup. A unique G Mesh front grille, larger air intakes, aerodynamic roof spoiler, rear lip spoiler, black wheel arch moldings, and exclusive machined 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tires give the sport utility vehicle a much more aggressive appearance.

Inside, Toyota continues the sporty theme with heavily bolstered heated front sport seats finished in synthetic leather and suede with red stitching. A heated leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, paddle shifters, aluminum pedals, suede knee pads, and exclusive GR Sport trim help create a cabin that feels more performance oriented than previous RAV4 models.

Technology is equally impressive. The Australian model includes a digital rearview mirror, head-up display, dual wireless smartphone chargers, 45-watt Universal Serial Bus Type C charging ports, a hands-free power tailgate with kick sensor, and a premium 9-speaker JBL audio system.

The RAV4 GR Sport will be available in Australia in Feverish Red, Frosted White, Eclipse Black, Massive Grey, and Urban Rock. Pricing starts at AUD $66,340 before on-road costs, making it the most expensive and most capable member of the new RAV4 family.
