Mercedes SL Facelift Rendered New Lights and More Power Revealed

Fresh spy shots are starting to tell a clearer story about the next evolution of the Mercedes-Benz SL, and even under heavy camouflage, there are some interesting details beginning to stand out. Test cars have been spotted out on public roads, and while the front end is still mostly hidden, it is already obvious that this is more than just a minor update.

The first thing that catches attention is the lighting. The new headlights appear to take on a sharper and more sculpted look, and inside them, the signature three-pointed star design is becoming part of the daytime running light pattern. It is a subtle detail, but it adds a strong identity that ties the roadster closer to the brand’s latest design direction. The grille itself does not seem dramatically different in size or shape, but there are hints that a darker, more contrasting finish could give the front end a more aggressive feel, similar to what we have recently seen on newer luxury models.

Around the back, things look more familiar for now. The prototypes still carry over much of the current rear design, but that is expected to change before production. If the front lighting is any indication, the taillights will likely follow the same theme with star-inspired elements, giving the car a more cohesive look from front to rear, especially at night.

Where things get more interesting is under the hood. The next version of the SL is expected to adopt an updated version of the 4.0 liter twin turbocharged V8 engine. This newer unit, known internally as an evolution of the M177, has already made its way into other high-end models and is designed to meet stricter emissions requirements while still delivering strong performance. In its latest form, it produces 537 horsepower and 750 Newton meters of torque, which is a noticeable step up compared to the current SL 55’s 476 horsepower and 700 Newton meters.

That kind of increase is not just about numbers on paper. It suggests a sharper driving experience, quicker acceleration, and potentially a more refined power delivery. For a car like the SL, which balances comfort with performance, that combination matters more than ever.

All signs point to a reveal happening later this year, and if these early test vehicles are anything to go by, the updated SL is shaping up to be a meaningful refresh rather than a simple facelift. It is the kind of update that keeps the model feeling modern while still staying true to what has made it iconic for decades.
