While many manufacturers are moving toward smaller engines and electrification, Mercedes-AMG appears determined to keep the unmistakable sound and character of an eight-cylinder engine alive with one of its most exclusive projects yet.

Recent sightings at Germany’s legendary Nürburgring have fueled excitement after a heavily camouflaged Mercedes-AMG CLE prototype was seen undergoing what appears to be an intensive round of final development testing. Unlike the typical public test sessions where several manufacturers share the circuit, this evaluation reportedly took place during a private rental of the Nordschleife. That gave Mercedes engineers complete control over the track, allowing them to focus entirely on collecting valuable performance data without outside traffic slowing the program.

Private Nürburgring sessions are usually reserved for vehicles nearing the end of their development cycle. Engineers use the demanding 12.9-mile circuit to fine-tune suspension settings, braking performance, steering response, cooling systems, and high-speed stability before a production model makes its public debut. Seeing the CLE prototype at this stage suggests Mercedes-AMG is entering the final phase before revealing the car to the world.

Although nearly every part of the prototype remains hidden beneath camouflage, several aggressive design elements stand out immediately. A massive fixed rear wing dominates the rear of the coupe, while large air openings and a prominent hood scoop hint at the enormous cooling demands of the engine underneath. Wide fenders, an aggressive front fascia, and a racing-inspired stance leave little doubt that this is far more than a standard CLE.

Perhaps the most exciting rumor surrounding the car involves its powertrain. Industry speculation continues to point toward a newly developed flat-plane crank V8 engine producing around 646 horsepower. If those reports prove accurate, the upcoming coupe could deliver a driving experience unlike anything currently offered in the Mercedes-AMG lineup. A flat-plane crank design generally allows an engine to rev more freely while producing a sharper, more exotic exhaust note compared with a traditional cross-plane V8.

That combination could make this upcoming model especially appealing to enthusiasts who have been hoping Mercedes-AMG would continue offering large displacement performance engines despite increasingly strict emissions regulations around the world.

The prototype is widely believed to be the next member of Mercedes-Benz’s exclusive Mythos collection. The Mythos program focuses on extremely limited production vehicles built for the brand’s most dedicated collectors. Rather than simply increasing horsepower, these vehicles showcase unique engineering, dramatic styling, and exceptional exclusivity.

Reports from industry insiders have suggested Mercedes could build as few as 30 examples worldwide. Although the company has not officially confirmed production numbers, such a limited run would almost certainly make the CLE Mythos one of the rarest modern Mercedes-AMG models ever produced.

The Nürburgring test has also sparked discussion about whether Mercedes-AMG attempted an unofficial fast lap during its private session. While there has been no confirmation of any record attempt, outright lap times may not be the primary objective. Mercedes already owns one of the most impressive production-car records with the remarkable AMG One hypercar, meaning the company can instead focus on perfecting the overall driving experience of the CLE rather than chasing another headline.

Another interesting possibility is that this extreme prototype may not be the only high-performance CLE in development. Earlier prototypes spotted during testing appeared significantly less aggressive, leading many enthusiasts to believe Mercedes-AMG could eventually introduce another flagship version with broader availability. Such a model could deliver much of the performance while remaining more accessible than the highly exclusive Mythos edition.

For performance car fans, the biggest takeaway is simple. Mercedes-AMG continues investing in emotional, driver-focused machines at a time when many feared the iconic V8 was disappearing. The sound, character, and excitement that have defined AMG for decades may still have an important place in the company’s future.
