A new chapter is unfolding for the high performance SUV from Lotus Cars. The company recently revealed a plug in hybrid version of the Lotus Eletre in China, signaling a major shift in the brand’s electrification strategy. While Lotus had previously committed to becoming an all electric brand, the market has been evolving quickly. With many regions still transitioning to electric vehicles, the company decided to introduce a powerful hybrid solution that blends traditional performance with long range electric capability.

The plug in hybrid Eletre is currently known in China as the Lotus “For Me,” though the name will likely change when the vehicle reaches global markets. China will be the first region to receive the model, with an international launch expected later as Lotus expands its electrified lineup. The new powertrain represents what the company calls a Hyper Hybrid system, combining a turbocharged gasoline engine with powerful electric motors to deliver impressive performance.

Under the hood sits a 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine paired with dual electric motors, one driving each axle. This configuration creates an advanced all wheel drive system designed to deliver instant torque and strong acceleration. The combined output reaches an incredible 939 horsepower, making this version of the Eletre one of the most powerful SUVs Lotus has ever produced.

Performance numbers reflect that ambition. The large performance SUV is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in about 3.3 seconds, placing it firmly among the fastest vehicles in its class. For a brand historically known for lightweight sports cars, the Eletre represents a completely different type of machine, yet Lotus engineers have worked hard to maintain the brand’s focus on dynamic driving.

One of the most surprising aspects of the hybrid system is its battery. Instead of the small battery packs typically used in plug in hybrids, the Eletre uses a massive 70 kilowatt hour battery. This allows the vehicle to travel approximately 220 miles on electricity alone under the Chinese CLTC testing cycle. For many drivers, that means daily commuting could happen entirely without using gasoline.

When the gasoline engine and electric motors work together, the total driving range increases dramatically. Lotus estimates the combined range could reach about 880 miles, giving the Eletre the ability to handle long road trips while still offering substantial electric driving capability.

The vehicle also adopts an advanced 900 volt electrical architecture, enabling extremely rapid charging under ideal conditions. Lotus claims the battery can charge to 80 percent in roughly 8 to 9 minutes when connected to compatible high power charging infrastructure. That level of charging speed could make the Eletre one of the quickest charging electrified SUVs available.

Despite its impressive technology, the Eletre remains a large luxury SUV. The vehicle weighs roughly 5,700 to 5,800 pounds due to its large battery, powerful electric motors, and premium equipment. It is produced in Wuhan, China, at a facility operated by Lotus under its parent company Geely.

Lotus is positioning the hybrid Eletre against some of the most powerful luxury SUVs on the market, including vehicles such as the Lamborghini Urus, Ferrari Purosangue, Aston Martin DBX, and BMW XM. With its combination of strong performance, long range capability, and advanced hybrid technology, Lotus hopes the Eletre will attract buyers who want both extreme speed and everyday practicality.

For Lotus, the plug in hybrid Eletre is more than just another model. It represents a strategic shift in how the brand approaches electrification. By combining electric performance with a combustion engine, Lotus is aiming to bridge the gap between traditional high performance vehicles and the fully electric future that still lies ahead.
