Inside Canada’s Chevrolet Silverado Factory Why Oshawa Matters

General Motors has quietly turned Canada into a serious force in full size truck production. At the center of it all is the Oshawa Assembly Plant in Ontario, where the Chevrolet Silverado is built for customers across North America. For many truck buyers, that maple leaf on the window sticker means something. It represents skilled labor, strong manufacturing roots, and a plant that fought its way back to life.

The Oshawa facility restarted truck production in 2021 after major investment from General Motors and support from federal and provincial governments. By 2022, the plant was building the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 alongside heavy duty 2500 and 3500 models on the same production line. That flexibility is rare. It allows the factory to respond quickly to demand, whether customers want a light duty pickup for daily driving or a heavy duty truck for serious towing.

Canadian built Silverados are typically crew cab configurations, many equipped with the 5.3 liter V8 engine. Heavy duty variants assembled in Oshawa include both gasoline and turbo diesel powertrains. The plant works in coordination with United States and Mexican facilities, but it remains the only Canadian site producing the Silverado.

What makes this story compelling is not just the trucks themselves, but the comeback. The Oshawa plant once faced closure. Instead, it evolved. Today, thousands of employees contribute to building one of the most recognized nameplates in the pickup segment. For truck enthusiasts, it is a reminder that manufacturing still matters, and that the Chevrolet Silverado continues to carry North American production strength on its frame.
