Hyundai Boulder Could Be Getting Closer to Production

A newly surfaced Hyundai design patent is giving us an interesting look at what could influence the future of the Boulder off-road SUV concept. The patent was filed in India on May 19, 2026, and the vehicle shown in the drawings carries many of the same rugged design ideas seen on the Hyundai Boulder Concept.

At first glance, the connection is hard to miss. The vehicle has a tall and boxy profile, heavily pronounced wheel arches, short overhangs, large off-road tires and the kind of ground clearance expected from a serious trail-focused SUV. The front end appears more refined than the original concept, with rectangular lighting elements, a revised bumper and a cleaner grille design.

There are still plenty of adventurous details. The patent images appear to show a large roof rack along with equipment extending between the hood area and the roof. These features give the SUV an expedition-ready appearance while maintaining the Boulder Concept’s tough proportions.

The timing makes the patent especially interesting because Hyundai has already confirmed that the Boulder Concept previews the company’s future body-on-frame direction. Hyundai is developing a new midsize pickup truck for North America using this type of construction, with the truck currently expected to arrive in 2029.

That does not mean a production Boulder SUV has been confirmed. Hyundai Motor America has stated that the Indian patent filing is not related to a North American concept or production vehicle. Still, the similarity between the patent drawings and the Boulder Concept makes the design worth watching.

If Hyundai eventually decides to build a rugged SUV based around its new body-on-frame architecture, it could give the company a serious competitor in the growing off-road SUV market. For now, these patent images provide another intriguing glimpse at where Hyundai’s rugged vehicle design could be heading.
