From Joke to Race Car BMW M3 Touring 24H Debuts at Nürburgring
Sometimes the best ideas start as a joke. That is exactly what happened with the racing version of the BMW M3 Touring. What began as an April Fools’ prank has now become a real race car that will appear at one of the most demanding endurance events in the world, the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2026.
Back in 2022, when BMW introduced the M3 Touring road car, engineers at BMW M Motorsport were already thinking about what a racing version might look like. The idea stayed mostly behind the scenes until 1 April 2025, when BMW posted images on social media of a fictional M3 Touring GT race car. The post was meant as an April Fools’ joke, but the reaction was anything but small. The images reached more than 1 million users and quickly generated over 1.6 million views. Engagement numbers were far higher than anything the team usually saw online.
The reaction from fans and media sparked something inside BMW. Suddenly, what had once been an internal idea started to feel like a real possibility. During the summer of 2025, engineers decided to turn the concept into an actual racing project. Within just 8 months, the BMW M3 Touring 24H was born.
Underneath the unique wagon body, the car shares its core technology with the BMW M4 GT3 EVO. That means serious racing hardware designed for endurance competition. Compared with the M4 GT3 EVO, the M3 Touring 24H is 200 millimetres longer and, including its large rear wing, about 32 millimetres taller. Even with the wagon shape, the performance figures remain identical to the GT3 race car.
The car is being prepared for competition at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, often called the Green Hell because of its narrow layout and unforgiving corners. Before the big race weekend, the M3 Touring 24H will make its competitive debut in the second round of the Nürburgring Endurance Series and will also appear at the official Nürburgring 24 Hours qualifying races.
BMW decided to make this project a tribute to the fans who helped turn a joke into reality. The early race livery includes selected social media comments from the original April Fools’ post. For the main 24 hour race, the car will wear another special design that continues the theme of fan involvement.
The car will be run by Schubert Motorsport and driven by a lineup of experienced BMW factory drivers. Behind the wheel will be Jens Klingmann, Ugo de Wilde, Connor De Phillippi, and Neil Verhagen. Instead of competing directly against the main GT3 cars for the overall victory, the M3 Touring 24H will run in the SPX class, allowing the team to showcase the concept while still pushing the car to its limits.
The program also includes support from tyre partner Yokohama, which will supply the racing tyres for the project. For the company, the collaboration marks an important milestone in its motorsport partnership with BMW.
BMW M Motorsport leadership sees the project as something truly special. According to the team, a race car like the M3 Touring 24H has never existed in the company’s motorsport history. It represents creativity, fan engagement, and a willingness to turn bold ideas into real machines.
Driver Jens Klingmann also highlighted how unusual the project is. What began as a playful April Fools’ moment has now turned into a legitimate endurance racing machine. And while the concept started as a joke, the car itself is very serious. The team’s goal is to deliver an exciting show for the fans at the Nürburgring and finish the race as close to the front as possible.
In a sport built on engineering precision and competition, it is rare for a fan reaction to influence a race program so directly. But in this case, the voices of the community helped create something unique. A racing wagon built for one of the toughest tracks on Earth is about to hit the Green Hell, proving that sometimes the most surprising ideas are the ones that become reality.
